The patriarchy of Thai Buddhism also contributes to prostitution, a problem that makes Thailand popular in the international news headlines; a point which will be discussed later.
Since Thai nuns have not been recognized legally or socially as ordained women, their status is the lowest of all women, because they do not belong to any category of women, either within the lay or monastic community.
But one thing that has never been mentioned, even by progressive monks, Buddhist male scholars or activists, is patriarchy within Buddhism itself.

BUDDHISM TERMS Asia Buddhism Buddha Theravada Mahayana Zen Nirvana
In Buddhism, the ancient concept of a "constituent factor" (Sanskrit dharma), perhaps originally conceived of as a constituent factor of Buddhist doctrine, came to fulfill this role of an ontological category, in the sense of a constituent factor of mind as well as matter.
The philosophical schools of Buddhism, amongst which the so-called Sarvastivada school is the most important historically in this context, soon came to furnish the teaching that bodily or mental factors are not the self with the additional connotation "because no self exists as a permanent substrate of mental states".
Buddhism is fairly unique as a traditional non-theistic religion, one whose tenets are not especially concerned with the existence or nonexistence of God.

In recent years, some haphazard acculturation has occurred-increasing attendance to Buddhism, formal education, adoption of Western dress styles, incorporation of local folk rituals, and engagement in non-traditional occupations and exchange systems-though not uniformly among Song communities nor to a degree that emblematic cultural practices and membership boundaries have disappeared.
Inasmuch as physical separateness from the Siamese majority was mandated by the government, ethnic enclavement and cultural persistence may have been as much a typical, historically consistent social adaptation to continuing political encapsulation as any intrinsic propensity toward cultural conservation.

Syncretism was often utilized in the study of Buddhism in Asia and is an important category in the history of religions, but there are few studies about syncretic phenomena in western countries, where the influence of Protestant Buddhism is more emphasized.
The presence of syncretism in the history of Buddhism is frequently mentioned with regard to its adaptation in Asia,(29) although its presence in and explanatory value for Buddhist practice in western countries has been little researched.
Given the importance of syncretism as a central concept in the dilution of religious identity and in its potential role in the study of Buddhist identity combinations, it is important to think about syncretism and Buddhism in western countries in more general terms.
