 Green Building Materials
Even the best current directories of green building materials are often forced to compare apples and oranges within the same category—for example, comparing the energy-intensity of one product with the toxicity of another (Wilson, 2000).
Green manufacturing must ultimately move toward the production and use of benign materials that can be “globally recycled”—that is, able at their end to be composted or reunited with nature in some way that makes them a potentially new resource (Berge, 2000).
Green initiatives have to begin everywhere, but the realms of consumption and prosumption may be the place where radical initiatives have the greatest space for movement.

UNRISD: Events Gendering Macro-Economic Policies: Concepts and Institutions
The presentations by the panelists — all researchers working in the area of feminist economics — attested to the considerable progress that feminist economists have made not only in challenging macro-economic models from a gender perspective, but also in presenting alternative models that incorporate gender as an analytical category.
While highlighting the important advocacy role of gender lobbies, participants spoke of the danger of a potential split between feminist advocates and feminist economists owing in part, at least, to the technical language used by the latter.
In her presentation, Nilufer Cagatay spoke of the extent to which apparently "genderless" macro-economic outcomes, such as agricultural supply response, expenditure patterns and growth levels, are in fact deeply influenced by the way in which conjugal and gender relations are organized in different societies.

Public Goods: How Economists Misunderstand Public Goods
It is my contention that the concept of Public Goods, as analysed by economists, involves such a category mistake, and that this mistake renders many of their analyses worthless.
Ryle's book focuses on the Cartesian category mistake in which mind and brain are confused and are allocated to the same logical category.
Not that I need to provide a complete definition of any given public good for the purposes of my argument - all I need to do is say enough about its nature to make it clear that it falls into a different logical category from that of private goods.

Fredericks said the second-half slide is due to a slowdown in Gross Domestic Product growth expected by economists during the fourth quarter, but it will be partly offset by the Olympic and election spending.
Companies selling multiple items in a product category often us price lining – offering all items in certain categories at a limited number of prices.
A firm markets its product to wholesalers and retailers who then persuade consumers to buy it.

 Political Theory
Public Goods as a Category Mistake, Richard Kimber on how economists misunderstand the concept of public goods
You Can Fool Some People Sometimes, the authors measured promises by the number of future tense sentence occurrences in 10-K reports and found that this number is significantly negatively correlated with both the return and the excess return on the company stock price.
The links in this section are intended to be to sites that relate to political theory in what I take to be the proper sense of the term 'theory'.

Economists Stephen Brown of New York University and William Goetzmann of Yale University found that just 35% of 282 funds listed as growth funds by a mutual fund rating service actually should have been listed in that category.
Some economists reckon that several human psychological biases mean that shares are more likely to be undervalued by most people compared with bonds, and so the wise, long-term investor should buy as many of them as possible.
Thus economists have long explained the equity premium by emphasising that returns on shares are far more volatile--that is, they jump up and down more--than those on bonds.

Brand Equity and Vertical Product Line Extent
Economists and marketing researchers refer to variation in quality levels of products within a category as "vertical" differentiation, whereas variation in the function or "category" of the products is referred to as "horizontal" differentiation.
There is an analogous question of what happens when the product line of a brand is extended vertically, either "up market" or "down market." This question of vertical extensions is part of the more general issue of how the vertical structure of a product line relates to brand equity.
Maximizing profits is likely to involve a tradeoff between preserving high brand equity (and therefore high margins) and pursuing the volume typically located in the lower end of the market.

More than 1,000 economists, ranging from Marxists to World Bank functionaries, from more than 40 countries are in Havana this week to debate the issue at the Sixth International Encounter of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems.
However, prosecutor Dexter Lee refuted the allegations, saying that U.S. authorities had not confirmed that, and he also made the observation that Judge Moreno had no jurisdiction in the case because the Cubans were not located on U.S. territory, but rather on board a Coast Guard cutter in the Florida Straits.

 Marxian economics - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
To some, Marxian economics may be viewed not as an all-encompassing approach, but as one important element in an analytical toolset--perhaps part of a broader category of heterodox economics or radical political economy.
Marx built on, and critiqued, the best-known economists of his day, the British classical economists.
The adherents of Marxian economics, particularly in academia, distinguish it from Marxism as a political ideology, arguing that Marx's approach to understanding the economy is an intellectually valuable one, independent of Marx's advocacy for revolutionary socialism or the inevitability of proletarian revolution.

Other economists claim threats to the middle class are downsizing in many sectors of the American economy, and the systematic elimination of unionized labor.
Most economists define "middle class" citizens as those with net worths of between $25,000 (low-middle class) to $250,000.

Goldmann attempted to explain the underlying unity of these two approaches to the novel in terms of the Marxist category of commodity fetishism.
Quite recently, Girard's writings have come to the attention of a number of French economists - some of them Marxists- with surprising results.
According to Goldmann, it is the interposition of a debased social relation between the individuals and the objects of their desires that generates the universe of inauthenticity described by Girard and Lukács.

So it is sometimes tempting to avoid the complications, and to apply the theory to average or aggregate behavior, thinking about the country as a whole as a “representative consumer.” In this technical note we discuss two issues.
An example of the inability of the present data system to answer important questions frequently surfaces in discussions of whether the cost of living for the elderly rises at a faster or slower rate than the CPI as a whole.
