Endangered, threatened & special concern species: Minnesota DNR
Species on the periphery of their range that are not listed as threatened may be included in this category along with those species that were once threatened or endangered but now have increasing or protected, stable populations.
A species is considered a species of special concern if, although the species is not endangered or threatened, it is extremely uncommon in Minnesota, or has unique or highly specific habitat requirements and deserves careful monitoring of its status.
Species of special concern are not protected by Minnesota's Endangered Species Statute or the associated Rules.

 Endangered Species
State Threatened Species - A threatened species is a native species that, although not presently in danger of extirpation, is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future in the absence of special protection and management efforts.
Category I - A native species with a presently stable or increasing population that current evidence indicates is especially vulnerable to extirpation because of limited range, low population or other factors.
State Endangered Species - An endangered species is a native species whose prospects of survival or recruitment within the state is in imminent

CNN - Canadian endangered species list grows - April 28, 1999
Canada's endangered species list for 1999 has 34 additions, including the killer whale, mountain beaver and harbor seal, according to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, which released the list on April 22.
Three species were removed, the status of three others, including the peregrine falcon, were moved to a lower risk category due to population improvements.
Canadian environmental groups believe that a recently-released policy framework for the endangered species legislation, set for introduction this summer, is inadequate.

Why You Should Read the Papers: Improving Reference Service in Public Libraries
This person, who was on the Committee on the Status of Endangered Species and Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), informed us, predictably, that an international list of threatened plant species did not exist, but that there was a list specifically for Canada.
We followed their advice, and were informed, again, that no such list existed, but they offered to send us a brochure listing all endangered fish, animal, bird, and plant species in Canada.
The first person we spoke to here informed us that there was no such international list, but that he could provide us with a list of plants and animals that cannot be imported into, or exported from, Canada.

 Threatened Species Fact Sheets
Threatened is a general term which covers a range of categories of species including presumed extinct, endangered (in danger of extinction, survival unlikely if threats to existence continue) and vulnerable (likely to move into the endangered category in the near future if threats continue).
At the same time, we have lost at least 60 species since European settlement, and the survival of 500–600 vascular plant species and at least 250 animal species is threatened.
Under this Act species, ecological communities and potentially threatening processes, are listed on Schedules by the Governor in Council after a process of nomination, assessment and recommendation by an independent Scientific Advisory Committee.

There are nine Categories of Threat in the IUCN Red List system: Extinct, Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Least Concern, Data Deficient, and Not Evaluated.

Until exhaustive surveys probing their disappearance can be carried out, these species cannot be classified in the Red List category of Extinct, but rather are flagged as “possibly extinct” within the Critically Endangered category.
The number of species in each IUCN Red List category in each of the hundreds of amphibian genera can be accessed here.
For example, 7.4% of amphibians are listed as Critically Endangered (427 species) compared with 1.8 % of birds (179 species) and 3.8% of mammals (184 species).

If during informal consultation, the agency and the Fish and Wildlife Service concur in writing that the proposed action is "not likely to adversely affect" a protected species, then the consultation process is complete.

Fortunately, like the Canada goose, the Trumpeter Swan has adapted well to a rural and urban mix of wintering habitat, so much so, that when it increased it's population above 10,000, it was moved from the 'endangered' wildlife category to the 'threatened' category.
Wildlife are an important focus for these regions and it is interesting to note that in some cases the wildlife species chosen is an endangered species.
That two species, the Trumpeter swan and the Bald eagle, adopted by B.C. communities, have risen from near extinction, thanks to the cooperation and dedication of communities, landowners, governments, organizations, and individuals, are wildlife success stories that can make all British Columbians proud.

 ENVIRO NEWS, October-December 2001 Vol. 5
They concluded that out of the 207 amphibian species then known from India, nine were critically endangered, 42 endangered, 39 vulnerable, 74 in the lower risk category while for 43, the data was deficient for determining their status.
Thereafter, R.S. Pillai (1973-1990) described 14 new species from Southern India, S.K. Chanda (1986-1990) described five new species from Northern India and Pranjalendu Ray (1992) four new species from Northern India.
But most of the taxonomic information on the amphibian fauna of India is available in the outstanding contributions of George Boulenger (1890) in the "Fauna of British India" series which includes 124 anurans, one salamander and five gymnophionans.

U.S. listing beluga sturgeon as threatened - Environment - MSNBC.com
Gabel said the sturgeon’s prospects are “threatened,” a lesser category than “endangered,” because some 2 million to 3 million are estimated to still exist, mostly in the Caspian and Black Seas, which both border Russia.
WASHINGTON - The government said Tuesday it was listing the beluga sturgeon as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, which could lead to a reduction or ban of U.S. imports of the prized beluga caviar.
In the United States, there have some reports of attempts to farm white sturgeon as a captive-raised commercial fish, he said, and the new listing “would affect species whether they’re wild-caught or captive-raised.”

WWFƒWƒƒƒpƒ“ -Statement to Call for the Conservation of Dugong Habitat in Okinawa and a Review of Plans for Construction of a Facility to Replace Futenma Air Station
In Japan, it is designated as an endangered species (Endangered species, category CR D1 or CR C2b, Mammalogical Society of Japan, 1997) due to the fact that an extremely small population presently lives exclusively in the waters around Okinawa Island in a very limited habitat area that is isolated from other populations.
As year-round observations reveal an increasing number of records on the east coast of central and northern Okinawa Island, this marine area is now considered year-round habitat for the Dugong, and an important distribution area for the species.
However, in a Japanese government policy statement issued in December 1999, the facility was defined as a gmilitary-civilian joint airporth, and in the project master plan released in July 2002, it had been substantially expanded to a 2500m long, 730m wide air facility (with a 2000m runway), constructed by reclaiming coral reef.

In the grassy marshes and sedge meadows in the Wallkill and other watersheds in Sussex, other rare plants and species thrive: the endangered long-tailed salamander, the threatened wood turtle and endangered small white lady's slipper and spreading globe flower.
Most of the turtle habitat is located above the drainage basin in upland headwater areas, where natural springs seep out of the hills, said James Sciacia, a principal zoologist with the state's endangered species program.
The proposed change, classifying the river as a Category One stream, would prevent any further degradation of the Wallkill.

Wild Bactrian Camels Critically Endangered, Group Says
The reclassification of wild Bactrian camels to "critically endangered" status in October 2002 places the camel in the same category as the panda, a standing that reflects the increasingly precarious position of that small population.
"This means that the wild population of Bactrian camels is on the brink of extinction," said Craig Hilton-Taylor, a program officer with the IUCNs endangered species listing project.
Summary The wild Bactrian camel, a two-humped ancestor of domesticated camels, is now critically endangered in its native habitat in the harsh deserts of Northwest China and Mongolia.
