 Defining the Fairy Tale
Some writers use "folk tale" to refer to the former and "fairy tale" to the latter, but not all folk tales fall into the category of the magic tale.
By the middle of the 19th century, the fairy tale was firmly established as a subset of "children's literature," even as writers continued to produce tales of this type that appealed to a broad spectrum of ages.
Characteristics of literary fairy tales, as opposed to folk tales, may include individualized characters with a more developed personality, more specific and detailed description of individuals and settings, and the elimination of much repetition as distracting from the flow of the story.

 Dragons
In Christian symbology, a dragon is seen defeated by the archangel Michael, whereas in myths and fairy tales dragons are killed and slain by the hero of the story.
Dragons deserve a category all their own because they are beasts found all over the world.
Dragons are winged beings portrayed in the ancient mythologies of most cultures.

 dr_c: Tolkein on Fairy Stories
I've never thought of a fairy tale (or story, I'm not sure from what you've written whether or not you consider them to be different) in that way.
Last Saturday's entry here, though, got me thinking about the nature of "fairy tales" again, however, and so I think I'm catching more of the ideas this time.
This is interesting, concerning that Tolkein's own best-selling works keep the Men (strictly speaking) a bit off to the side; the stories are primarily "concerning Hobbits," who would seem to fit the same category as his "elves and fairies" in the remark just quoted.

 Introduction to E.T.A Hoffmann
Hoffmann was part of the German Romantic period with his fantastic fairy tales and historical stories, and at the same time transcended Romanticism with his realistic, psychological depictions of highly gifted and artistic, yet tormented souls.
He wrote five novels, three collections of short stories, fairy-tales, novellas, assorted articles on various contemporary composers (Beethoven amongst them), several plays and various essays.
Only a few of Hoffmann's later works and major novels which belong to the category of fantastic satirical novels, such as Kater Murr, Prinzessin Brambilla, Klein Zaches and Meister Floh, were translated into English.

The Role of Wizards in Fantasy Literature
In fantasy literature, the wizards themselves can play the role of hero, and even those who are not actively heroic characters have goals and desires which drive them, and are generally much more dynamic figures than those of the preceding fairy tales.
This is one of the primary distinctions between wizards in fantasy literature and those in the older fairy tales and knightly epics that preceded the fantasy genre.
By the time of his adventures in The Farthest Shore, Ged has moved into another category of wizards in fantasy literature, that of the counselor.

And, for those who crave features that can be enjoyed by every member of the family (grammar school kid, teenage troublemaker, tough-to-please twenty-something, beleaguered mom and dad, and grumpy grandparents), there may be nothing better than this motion picture, which celebrates fairy tales and true love with its tongue firmly planted in its cheek.
(Many Disney films fit into this category.) The crafting of The Princess Bride, however, is superior.
Although children generally appreciate The Princess Bride's pseudo-fairy tale narrative and action-oriented approach, much of the dialogue is designed for adults.

 The Flick Filosopher Shrek 2
So much of the sarcastic chuckling here comes as a result of realizing that you never knew it could be so much fun to have a movie work so hard and so successfully to tell you that fairy tales are bunk.
I mean to say: Shrek, which won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film a coupla years back, and I'm tempted to think the category was invented just so that film could win it, was pretty damn brilliant, and Shrek 2 is even better.
The kicker is dual: not only is this big green lumpy guy not the groom her parents had in mind for their darling daughter, but Far Far Away is a snickering sendup of Hollywood, the locale, as well as Hollywood, the culture, where appearance is everything.

THE WORLD OUTLOOK OF THE ANCIENT BALTS: Summary
This chapter offers a number of examples reflecting the image of the general world model in Lithuanian folklore (songs, fairy tales, riddles).
This category of people might have been fishermen, boatmen, and sailors, amber collectors and workers, as well as all craftsmen who got their livelihood from working the non-ferrous metals extracted from the earth.
The three areas of traditional Baltic world outlook, spread along a west-east axis on the territory inhabited by the Balts, exhibit with great regularity the polar members of the oppositions and reflect, as it were, three vertical spheres of the model of the world.

Child Toy-Folktales of Norway -Folktales of the World-
The nineteenth-century collection is obviously weighted very heavily toward the (Norwegian) title category of "eventyr" -- essentially the familiar "fairy tales" of princesses and unlikely heroes, talking animals and magical helpers, known throughout the Old World.
They are rendered in a style closer to Icelandic sagas than, say, to Perrault, or even the Grimms, and, although not treated in a strictly "scientific" manner by their collectors/editors, are utterly distinct from Hans Christian Andersen's contemporary inventions.
Some of the stories translated by Dasent incidentally include distinctly Norwegian material, but this is comparatively scarce -- ironic, given Dasent's interest in England's supposed shared Nordic heritage and the genius of the "Germanic race." The contents are mainly variants of widely distributed tale-types.
