Predictably, queer images in Hong Kong's "category 3" films tend towards lesbian erotica aimed at the fantasies of a heterosexual male audience, as in the Sex and Zen series (1991-1996), the Erotic Ghost Story series (1990-1992), the Raped by an Angel series (1993-2000), or Ho Shu Pau's lesbian thriller The Love that is Wrong (1993).
While Hong Kong's film industry is not as strong as it was before the handover, and while production of films overall has lessened considerably, the openness of queer themes in Hong Kong cinema is apparently here to stay.
While filmmakers' fears of what would follow 1997 were justified, the production of queer films continued according to the "one country, two systems" policy, whereby the mainland government would not interfere with Hong Kong's social fabric until 2047.

Several Hong Kong films such as Wong Kar Wei's In the Mood For Love and Happy Together have been nominated and have even won in the prestigious Cannes film festival in France.
Most of these stars now rarely star in or direct movies in Hong Kong; in fact, some of them have even gone so far as to indicate that they will never work in their native country again.
While some of the more prominent Asians in the American film industry such as John Woo reason that the entertainment industry in Hong Kong is flooded with worthless movies and is no longer providing the environment for them, this is purely an excuse.

The Illuminated Lantern: Taoist Priests and Hopping Vampires
Young female ghosts are the most common of all supernatural features of Hong Kong movies, appearing in scores of films.
Instead the colors may best describe their duties: 'Black' being synonymous with 'death.' In general, the Taoist priests called upon in Hong Kong movies would best fall into the 'Black-head' category.
Both kinds of priests are also referred to as 'fire-dwelling,' in that they live among the people of the village and dispense advice.

In 1993, Mandarin Films started to operate in Singapore, partly because of the lucrative tax-break which the Singapore government offered to film joint-ventures, and partly due to the politico-economic uncertainty in Hong Kong in the run-up to the imminent handover of the territory to China in 1997.
Yet these films distinctly featured outlooks and sensibilities more attuned to the Hong Kong way of life, even though some were shot in Singapore.

Films rated Category II may contain mild to strong violence, nudity that is usually not sexually oriented, explicit language and adult situations.

Ironically, it is one of few South Korean films to receive international distribution, with theatrical showings in the UK, Sweden, Hong Kong and the USA amongst others.
Drama is often used as a catchall term for films that do not easily fit into any more specific category, encompassing an arguably more wide-ranging variety of films than any other genre, often including the most innovative and interesting films purely because they are otherwise difficult to pigeonhole.

 Chingmy Yau
Yau became one of the queens of Category III (Hong Kong's version of the NC-17 rating, given to movies with high doses of sex and/or violence) films, through her roles in movies such as the deliciously sleazy Naked Killer (1992).
Yau provided excellent comic relief (and got back a bit at the hounding Hong Kong press) as well as providing a nice bit of "eye candy" by portraying an annoying tabloid TV reporter in High Risk (1995).
But it seems as if Yau is following the lead of many other Hong Kong actresses who shot to fame and left just as quickly.

 Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2002-349
According to the intervener, the fact that the applicant, through its affiliates, currently operates as a distributor of Chinese-language movies in Canada, with at least 80% of the distribution market share for movies from Hong Kong, also indicates that the proposed service would be predominately Chinese-language.
Fairchild submitted that the applicant's current proposal is essentially identical to its earlier application for a Category 2 specialty television service to broadcast movies in Cantonese and Mandarin (the Chinese languages) that was denied in Applications for licences for Category 1 and Category 2 specialty television services — Denied, Decision CRTC 2000-739, 24 November 2000.
In response, the applicant stated that it intended to offer a niche service that would focus on movie programming and that at least 90% of the programming would be drawn from program subcategories 7c (Specials, mini-series, and made-for-TV feature films) and 7d (Theatrical feature films aired on television).

Chow felt he had accomplished every thing he could in Hong Kong cinema, and that his roles were becoming limited to those in which he played the suited cop/killer.
Chow made his first movie in 1976—a Category III flick titled Massage Girls—but his film career got off to a shaky start as it was difficult to find roles which suited him.
After filming Peace Hotel (1995), Chow took a two-year break from films to learn English, whereupon he moved to America to try his hand at American film stardom.

The two become fast friends, but it’s not meant to be—Kitty kills her father’s murderer (and all of his associates as well) and draws the attention of Sister Cindy (Madoka Sugawara), a professional hitwoman who takes her in, gives her a new identity, and trains her to be an assassin.
