Infectious diseases such as lower respiratory tract infections may account for a substantial increase in the number of hospitalized older patients in the coming years, according to CDC researchers.
The finding, reported in the Dec. 15 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, highlighted gaps in vaccine coverage, as well as needed improvements in diagnosis and treatment, according to Timothy Uyeki, M.D., of the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases.

Marburg, with its high fatality rates and human-to-human transmission in aerosol form, is considered a Category A Critical Biological Agent, in the company of anthrax, smallpox, plague, and Ebola.
Marburg is in the same family as Ebola virus, the filovirus family.
