 Eyecare Business
Four years after CR 39s 50th anniversary, PPG announced Trivex, a totally new material originally developed for the military as a special category called "transparent armor." To qualify for that classification, a material must be lightweight, impact resistant, solvent resistant, and provide good optics.
PPG was aided by two major lens producers: Hoya and Younger Optics.
The optical industry has seen an avalanche of new developments in ophthalmic lenses during the past 10 yearsmore than during the preceding 100 years.

1999; Morphometric analysis of age-related changes in the human basilar membrane
In some cases there is inadequate histopathologic change to explain the observed SNHL, leading to the proposal of an "indeterminate category." Some authors have proposed changes in the basilar membrane (BM) as a possible mechanism of hearing loss in the indeterminate category of presbycusis (Nadol, Oto H N Surg, 1979; Ishii, Eur Arch Otorhin, 1994).
Under high-resolution light microscopy (Nomarski optics), BM thickness was measured and the number of tympanomesothelial cells (TMCs) lining the BM was counted in 4 cochlear locations (3, 9, 18, 27 mm from round window) in 92 temporal bones.
The objective of this study has been to quantify changes in the BM with age, and correlate these changes with patterns of hearing loss in patients.

Advanced Aquarist Feature Article - February 2002
The spectral signatures obtained with the spectrometer demonstrate that these two metal halide lamps are full spectrum (though the 12,000° K lamp output is skewed towards the blue portion of the spectrum) and most resembles the "white light" category defined by Kinzie et al.
Spectral signatures of these lamps were determined with an Ocean Optics spectrometer.
Thus, the magnitude of the fluorescence signal depends mainly on the amount of light energy absorbed (which itself depends on the spectral quality and intensity of the illumination source and the quantity and absorption spectra of the photosynthetic pigments present in the cells) and the fraction of reaction centers that are open.

ELECTRICITY MISCONCEPTIONS: scientist's definition of electricity
Instead electricity has turned into something like "physics" or "optics" or "weather." In the way that wheels and bicycle chains "are" physics, batteries and wires "are" electricity.
The quantities 'Electricity' and 'Potential', when multiplied together, product the quantity 'Energy.' It is impossible, therefore, that electricity and energy should be quantities of the same category, for electricity is only one of the factors of energy, the other factor being 'Potential.' " -----
Instead, they agree that an electric current is a flow of "electricity." They also agree that electrons and protons carry charges of "electricity," and that quantities of electricity are to be measured in units of charge rather than units of energy (the modern units of electricity are called Coulombs.)
