9ICAL abstracts This paper presents the linguistic mechanisms used to represent spatial relations in Seediq and Tsou, two Austronesian languages spoken in the highlands of central Taiwan that lack the grammatical category of prepositions, focusing on the syntax and semantics of locative nouns and path verbs. The acoustic correlates of laxing we expected to find were a centralization of the vowels reflected in formant values (a rise in F1 for high vowels and a drop for low vowels; a rising of F2 for front vowels and a lowering for back vowels) and a shortening of the duration.
