The 23rd Annual Poets' Corner Contest, sponsored by the City of Modesto's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department and the city's Poets' Corner Committee, is now underway.
This year's special category is poetry on the subject of "A Special Building" in the community, with emphasis on such aspects as: architectural style, historical significance, the construction process or its past or present use.
Poems must be unpublished, not exceed 32 lines, include a title and not have won in any previous Poets' Corner contest.

Smith won the Governor General's Literary Award in the poetry category in 1943 with News of the Phoenix.
Best known as both poet and anthologist, Smith, with F.R. Scott, also founded the McGill Fortnightly Review (which is recognized as the first journal to publish modernist poetry and critical opinion in Canada).
A.J.M. (Arthur James Marshall) Smith was born in Montreal in 1902 and passed away in 1980.
