Indian writing in English, or IWE (a traditional literary-critical category that hegemonically references all South Asian writing in English), occupied pride of place at the festival with international stalwarts like V. Naipaul, Amitav Ghosh, Rohinton Mistry, Amit Chauduri, and Vikram Seth rubbing shoulders with regional giants like U. Anathamurthy and Sunil Gangopadhyay.
Hence I propose discrimination in exploring the very category of Indian writers in English, where all writers, regardless of modality of their literary practice or their political and ethical imperatives, are herded together and become indistinguishable from each other.
So in this book, I depart from Naipaul, engaging in some critical border drawing to demarcate a different province of the imagination within the exploding sphere of contemporary South Asian writing in English.

This category comprises a few examples of early writing including cuneiform, Babylonian, Egyptian and Greek.
This category groups together pre-1600 bound manuscripts described in James A. Corbett, A Catalogue of the Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts of the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, 1978), as well as more recently acquired manuscript codices.
This heading serves to group a few copies of the Qu'ran, palm leaf manuscripts and other examples of writing from the Far East.

Poynter Online - Death of the Feature
While quality of writing is not crucial in the Pulitzer competition -- as opposed to the ASNE Distinguished Writing Awards or the Ernie Pyle Award -- surely we'd expect a Pulitzer winner in the features category to stand out for the quality of the prose.
Our group respected the reporting effort, but did not think the writing rose to the heights of the category's historic winners.

 74th Oscar Countdown: Part 6
This year's Academy Awards stands to be one of the most interesting around, especially because we have very few sure things in any category, and even the big one, Best Picture, is in doubt for so many reasons.
In The Bedroom, my choice as the year’s best film, would be a very worthy choice, but given the power of the other three nominees in the category, they have all the momentum.
For a while, it looked like the first Lord of the Rings installment might actually be the frontrunner to win the Academy’s top prize, especially after winning the inaugural AFI Award for Best Movie of the Year.

The Formation of the New Testament Canon
The first Christian scholar to engage in researching and writing a complete history of the Christian church, Eusebius of Caesarea, reveals the embarrassing complexity of the development of the Christian canon, despite his concerted attempt to cover this with a pro-orthodox account.
Pantaenus is also the first to defend the Epistle to the Hebrews as authentic (this had long been in dispute even by his time), on the argument that Paul wanted to compose it anonymously for that particular audience (M 130), and this opinion is generally carried as authoritative (M 134).
The first Christian text that did not become canonized but was respected as authentic is the first epistle of Clement of Rome, reasonably dated to 95 A.D. (M 40), and contained in many ancient Bibles and frequently read and regarded as scripture in many churches (M 187-8).

Poynter Online - The Art & Craft of Editorial Writing
Editorials prompted by Supreme Court cases can often be filed in the D.B.I. category -— dull but important -- which means they are largely unread.
It will be familiar to editorial writers who have attended conventions of the National Conference of Editorial Writers ; however, to our knowledge, it's never been done on a public website for all to see and share.
Too often, the only feedback editorial writers get is from nasty letters that take issue with the content -- not the style or structure -- of their work.

Do architecture critics matter? by Francis Morrone
Her writings earned her, in 1970, the very first Pulitzer Prize to be awarded in the new category of “criticism.” To date, thirty-one such Pulitzers have been handed out, and a remarkably high percentage have gone to architecture critics—six, to be precise.
Huxtable made a splash at the Times, writing about her subject at a fraught time for American cities.
I believe that it was her paeans to preservation rather than her spirited defense of the glass-box “vernacular” that made her so popular among a broad readership of middle-class New Yorkers—the same who might have disregarded her denigration of Lincoln Center as they stood, happily, in its plazas before concerts discussing her latest column.

I'm busily writing a paper on exactly this stuff, but I have not explained enough category theory here to describe it in detail yet.
To do this, we need to introduce a couple more ideas: the product of categories, and the opposite of a category.
Whenever you see this perverse contravariant behavior going on, you should suspect an opposite category is to blame.

 John Benjamins:
The analysis of the data reveals that by Early Middle English some gerundial patterns had become structurally ambiguous and thus served as the basis for the reanalysis of a nominal category as a verbal one.
This paper examines the process whereby the English gerund, originally an abstract deverbal noun of action, was reinterpreted as part of the verb system and acquired verbal properties, such as the ability to govern a direct object (e.g., by writing a letter).
The actualization (Timberlake 1977) of the innovated underlying structure at the observable level of language use is also discussed, as are the implications of the changes undergone by the gerund for current views of grammaticalization as the main mechanism of syntactic change.

I didn't include the older fact well known to enriched category theorists: even without any symmetry or braiding, V-Mod is a bicategory in which all right extensions and right liftings exist (I don't like the word "biclosed"; I use "left closed", "right closed" and "closed" for both when dealing with a monoidal category).

SOHH.com Global Forum - My predictions for the 2003 Academy Awards....
With the WGA award in this category going to the non-nominated screenplay for Michael's Moore "Bowling for Columbine," Todd Haynes' script missed the last opportunity to raise its weak profile in one of the major categories.
It also won the Golden Globe for Best Drama, which is a more reliable predictor than the one for Musical/Comedy.
With "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" now an actual sitcom, and whatever prestige it had reduced to TV laughter, this race is between Haynes and Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to Her." "Far From Heaven" remains slightly behind the lead because popularity for "Talk to Her" seems stronger with its Best Director nomination.

The Very Best Books : Screenplay: Writing the Picture

The problem with most screenwriting books is that they manage to cover only a small angle of the process, or they try to span the gamut and do it so thinly as to be useless.

At a time when Indian writing in English is seen to be largely synonymous with fiction, and fiction with the novel, it is worth remembering this figure.
