Irish Republicanism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Goulding also drove the IRA into an ideologically Marxist-Leninist direction which attracted idealistic young supporters in the Republic, but alienated and angered many of the IRA's core supporters in the North.
The argument led to a split in 1970, between the Official IRA (supporters of Goulding's Marxist line) and the Provisional IRA (also called Provos, traditional nationalist republicans).
The Provos were led by Seán Mac Stiofáin and immediately began a large scale campaign against the unionist paramilitaries and British forces in Northern Ireland, while the Official IRA also initially maintained an armed campaign.

Goulding, who having been imprisoned in Wormwood Scrubs for the early years of the border campaign was regarded as being unaccountable for its dismal failure and was better placed than most to consider the movement’s shortcomings from a position of detachment.
Meanwhile, Goulding maintained that the provision of such assistance from the south was merely an attempt to distract attention away from the development of socialist politics in the Republic, perhaps even precipitating a split in the movement.
For Goulding et al this was no longer an issue, they believed that militancy had proved ineffective and was no longer a viable option, meanwhile, abstentionism was merely seen as cumbersome historical baggage which was hindering progress towards the establishment of an effective socialist movement.

Geraghty also uses Cathal Goulding to argue to that the troubles were started by the IRA using the NICRA as a Trojan horse to force the loyalists into attacking catholics thus sparking a new wave of civil war and bringing support to the IRA.
Geraghty uncritically invokes Goulding as some kind of disinterested observer when it is clear Goulding's words are the special pleading of an opportunist trying desperately trying to explain away the old policies of OIRA in the late 60's and justify the worker's party of early to mid 1980's.
But even if for the sake of argument Goulding's Trojan horse statements are assumed to be true, the tactic could only work if the Ulster statelet was fundamentally sectarian and denied civil rights to catholics.
