APA News Release - Catharsis Increases Rather Than Decreases Anger and Aggression, According to a New Study
In contrast, students who were given a newspaper article that debunked the catharsis effect were relatively disinclined to hit the punching bag.
During the computer competition, the participant was able to control the volume and duration of a blast of noise their partner would receive when they were slow to respond to a question.
The purpose of combining these two activities was to test whether the act of hitting the punching bag (catharsis) would reduce the participant's anger and aggression during the second exercise.

  Catharsis
No matter what Aristotle’s original intent was for catharsis and applications thereof, in the late 1800’s, the proliferation of many modern versions of psychotherapy and other healing related intentions for the heart, body, and mind mushroomed.
As the term catharsis became more widely used in a variety of modern psychological healings, its meaning became much more general in nature, and it was often rather vaguely defined.
I’m still not able to put my finger on whether or not the catharsis is effective due to spontaneous revelations during any artistic project, computer utilization, or writing creation, or, if it really is only due to the cognitive intentions and expectations of the catharsis.

Catharsis is the Greek Katharsis word meaning "purification" or "cleansing" derived from the ancient Greek gerund καθαίρειν transliterated as kathairein "to purify, purge," and adjective katharos "pure or clean" (ancient and modern Greek: καθαρός).
Lessing sidesteps the medial aspect of the issue and translates catharsis as a purification, an experience that brings pity and fear into their proper balance: "In real life, he explained, men are sometimes too much addicted to pity or fear, sometimes too little; tragedy brings them back to a virtuous and happy mean.".
Catharsis describes the result of means taken to cleanse away blood-guilt—"blood is purified through blood" (Burkert 1992:56) a process in the development of Hellenic culture in which the oracle of Delphi took a prominent role.

By catharsis here is meant a complex set of psychosomatic processes by means of which the human being becomes purged of an overload of distress due to the cumulative frustration of basic human needs (Chapter 4: Human needs and behaviour).
If catharsis is one of the necessary processes whereby human beings liberate their distress-occluded intelligence, as well as their capacities for love and creative will, then that process surely comes of age when the liberated intelligence reviews the theoretical assumptions in terms of which it has been liberated.

Tragic catharsis, however, cannot be reduced to the purgation of the emotions.
For Else, tragic catharsis is not the emotional effect of tragedy on the audience.
Although catharsis as the purification of tragic action is untenable as the “meaning” of the catharsis clause, and the catharsis in the definition should be the emotional effect of tragedy, this purification of action is still assumed as the presumption of this emotional effect.
