  Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus)
Catharus ustulatus ustulatus: Winters central western Mexico (northwestern Nayarit) south to Costa Rica -- both coastal slopes (rarely and locally on interior slopes) -- and mountains of western Panama.
Catharus ustulatus oedicus: Tres Marias Islands and mainland Nayarit south and east along Pacific coast to Nicaragua, north to central and eastern Guatemala, possibly Northeastern Chiapas.
Catharus ustulatus almae: Central and northwestern South America, mainly from Northwestern Argentina and Bolivia north and west, possibly to eastern Panama.

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TWO PARTLY SYMPATRIC SPECIES OF THRUSHES (CATHARUS) IN MEXICO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
SUMMARY Two species of nightingale thrushes, Catharus occidentalis and C. frantzii, are so similar morphologically that their status as separate species has only recently become firmly established.
Adaptive modifications and ecological isolating mechanisms in the thrush genera Catharus and Hylocichla.
Studies of isolating mechanisms in sibling species of meadowlarks (Sturnella) by Lanyon (1956, 1957) and Szijj (1966), of Empidonax by Johnson (1963), of Myiarchus by Lanyon (1963), and of Agelaius by Hardy and Dickerman (1965) are among recent contributions that have dealt with understanding ecological relationships and speciation in birds.

 Catharus Thrushes
Many birders look forward to the colorful and active warblers encountered during spring migration, peaking in late April to May. But other spring migrants will be moving north as well.
Four members of the genus Catharus occur regularly in Bexar County: Hermit, Swainson’s, and Grey-cheeked Thrushes, and Veery.
Hermit Thrush, like all of the Catharus thrushes, is a small thrush, much smaller than a Robin, and even smaller than the larger sparrows such as Harris’s or White-crowned Sparrow.

Auk, The: FRUIT ABUNDANCE AND LOCAL DISTRIBUTION OF WINTERING HERMIT THRUSHES (CATHARUS GUTTATUS) AND YELLOW-RUMPED ...
ABSTRACT.-We conducted winter censuses of two short-distance migrants, Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) and Yellow-rumped Warblers (Dendroica coronata), over seven years in five different habitats to determine whether their local abundances could be predicted by fruit pulp biomass.
Using seven years of data across five habitats, we examined whether local abundances of Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) and Yellowrumped Warblers (Dendroica coronata) are related to fruit abundance.
We selected those species because they are common and highly frugivorous and differ markedly in social behavior (and, therefore, may respond differently to variation in fruit abundance).

Auk, The: Sex-biased winter distribution and timing of migration of Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) in eastern ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
ABSTRACT.-We analyzed distribution of Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus faxoni) wintering in the eastern United States and northeastern Mexico using data from 2,077 specimens collected in winter or during migration.
Hermit Thrushes breed throughout North America north of ~37[degrees] latitude, at higher elevations farther south in the Rocky and Appalachian mountains, and in the southwestern United States (Jones and Donovan 1996, American Ornithologists' Union 1998).
Birds breeding from southern Northwest Territories across to Newfoundland and south to Virginia represent Catharus guttatus faxoni (although birds breeding in Newfoundland are sometimes considered a distinct subspecies [Lane and Jaramillo 2000]).

It is a pity we don't have a spread wing or a chest/ belly shot.
I am much more comfortable with eastern Catharus thrush and so do not know this race of Hermit that shows no reddish in the tail or would have no demarcation of back/rump and tail.
One potential pitfall is that the Newfoundland population of Grey-cheeked (minimus) is warmer coloured than the mainland population, also it does seem like the NJ bird was photographed in the early morning when there was a nice warm tone to the light.

I examined the relationship between the body size and fat deposition of Veery (Catharus fuscescens), Swainson’s thrush (Catharus ustulatus), and Gray-cheeked thrush (Catharus minimus) passing through northeastern Illinois during spring migration.
Wing length is not negatively correlated with fat deposition in Catharus thrushes as Yong and Moore (1994) suggested.
Such variation is known to exist in North American Catharus thrushes, particularly between eastern and western races (Pyle 1997).

WINGBEAT FREQUENCY OF TWO CATHARUS THRUSHES DURING NOCTURNAL MIGRATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-16)
Radio transmitters emitting continuous signals were mounted on Swainson's Thrushes (Catharus ustulatus) and Veerys (C. fuscescens) during two spring migration seasons.
Taking advantage of this property of radio transmitters emitting contin- uous signals, we studied Swainson's Thrushes (Catharus ustulatus) and Veerys (C. fuscescens) to obtain long records of WBF during nocturnal migration.
METHODS Over two seasons in May, two Swainson's Thrush- es and three Veerys were captured in mist nets in a forest fragment near Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
