The cathedral had its beginnings as a parish in 1803, when the first St. Joseph Church, administered by Franciscan priests, was built at the corner of San Fernando and Market streets.
A major restoration took place for the 75th anniversary of the current structure, which one year later was approved by the Vatican as the cathedral of the Diocese of San Jose (pending restoration).
