However, it is the current transformation that returns the Cathedral to its rightful place as a "Jewel of the City"; a center of worship, culture, art and beauty.
The team leading both the restoration and rejuvenation of the Church had two main goals: to restore the worship environment to its past glory and to make the Church more accessible to the community at large by integrating the complex into the life of the city.
To meet these twin goals, designer James Shields and others on the HGA team worked closely with the Cathedral building committee to ensure that the Cathedral interior was a model of conformity to the directives of the liturgical documents of the Roman Catholic Church as promulgated by Vatican II.

Vatican Nixes Liberals' Cathedral "Renovation" (virtual destruction) [Free Republic]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
A Vatican department has ruled against Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland's renovation of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, ordering that plans for the $4.5 million project be redone, according to the canon lawyer in Rome who is representing renovation opponents.
The cathedral, in the 800 block of N. Jackson St. in downtown Milwaukee, was dedicated in 1853, gutted in a fire in 1935 and rebuilt in 1943.
The first serious obstacle to approving the planned renovation of the Cathedral is the incongruity of the proposed floor plan with the architectural structure of the church, that is to say, the general layout of the church with its nave, apse, and natural presbyterium is evidently pre-established by the architectural style.

The other church, Saint James was rebuilt in the early 16th century, to the designs of John Wastell, who designed the Bell Harry Tower at Canterbury Cathedral, the fan vault of Kings College chapel, and the churches at Saffron Walden and Lavenham.
The exterior was, however a very different case, for not only did the cathedral lack its essential vestries, but more visibly, it was left without the central tower and spire which the architect had intended to rise from the crossing.
A Millennium Appeal was launched to raise funds for the completion of these parts of the cathedral, fuelled by the legacy by Dykes Bower of £1.8 million to the church when he died.

Finally, there is a fourth group, probably the largest in number, who simply do not appreciate or understand the importance of a cathedral or its role in the life of the Catholic community… and who now are confused by all of this furor.
