Catherina McKiernan is the headline performer for the 2004 version of the Stormont International Cross Country meeting sponsored by the NI Events Company and Reebok.
McKiernan has already had a double celebration this week with a 34th birthday on Sunday and her inclusion in Ireland's team for the European Cross Country in Edinburgh on December 14 despite missing the trial through influenza.
McKiernan who was an impressive winner of the Margate International last month denies she has ambitions of a podium place in the Europeans eleven years after winning the inaugural race.

Catherina McKiernan, a native of Drumkeeran, Cornafean, is one of the world’s leading female athletes in the marathon and cross-country disciplines.
Catherina was still in fourth place as the finishing line beckoned but the Cornafean woman produced a remarkable spring to leave Dias and her Portuguese counterpart, Ferreira, trailing and this was enough to win her another silver medal.
Catherina withdrew from the Irish Olympic squad after she decided that it would not be possible for her to be fully fit for the Games in September.

McKiernan, now resident in Dublin although she was born and brought up in the border county of Cavan, is aiming for nothing less than a new world best.
Amsterdam was chosen as the venue for her attempt because of its flat two-lap course, which crosses 16 of the city's famous canals, and usually mild weather.
McKiernan has been grabbing much of the attention in Amsterdam but a strong men's field has been assembled as well.

Catherina McKiernan won yesterday's women's Mini Marathon in Dublin.
She was almost a minute clear of second placed Jolene Byrne of Donore who finished second in 34 minutes 34 seconds with Pauline Curley another ten seconds back in third place.
McKiernan broke clear early on and had a 50 metre lead by the three kilometre mark and won with ease from there on.

Last year Catherina ran the Ras for the first time and over 6000 thousand spectators turned up to watch Ireland's favourite athlete put away a world class field.
We are looking forward to Catherina coming back to Dunleer and we will be expecting a much larger crowd than last year to cheer her on to victory.

A pleased McKiernan commented, "I was really happy with how I ran today, you are always trying to get a little bit more from yourself, and I was happy that I felt so good at the end.

Catherina McKiernan (34) has announced her retirement from competitive athletics, leaving a huge void in the sport and indeed Irish sport in general.
One abiding memory on the track was at the European Cup in the Morton Stadium in 1994 where she ran a virtually solo 10,000 metres to win in 31:19.11 which was the 4th fastest in the world that year.
When Catherina won the Berlin Marathon in 1997 in the fastest debut by a woman for the event in 2:23:44 and subsequently won the London and Amsterdam Marathons the following year she was elevated to iconic status.

Catherina McKiernan: won her 13th successive race in New Orleans over the weekend.
CATHERINA McKIERNAN came down from the ice-cold air of altitude in Albuquerque to 96% humidity and a temperature of 24 degrees win a big 10k road race in New Orleans at the weekend.
McKiernan returned to altitude immediately after the race and will remain at the training camp there for another week.

This wasn't because she wanted to run further or shorter than the 26 miles and 385 yards, but because the TV cameras covering the leaders were positioned close to that blue line, ready to beam close-up images around the globe.
These would have revealed that Catherina had indeed suffered mightily from stomach cramps, a bad stitch and whatever else you wish to call it.
Catherina's overcoming her problems to win suggests that you can come through, if not smelling of roses, then cenainly in a good time.
