Catherine Hardwick shows us her eye for the indie aesthetic with her kinetic framing and camera movement as she follows the muddied gray morning of the Venice neighborhood also know as ‘Dogtown,’ as a pack of friends sneak out of their homes and assemble to surf the morning break on a nearby beach.
Director Catherine Hardwick (whose previous credits include the ludicrously overrated ‘Thirteen’;) captures the dynamic frenzy of the burgeoning 70’s skateboarding pop cultural phenomenon, but not much else.
Hardwicke commits the same sins here that she did with her earlier effort, mostly being that she has too much of an appetite for explosiveness, and no patience for dramatic build up.

Just as Hardwicke was about to shoot her first footage, the cow stood up and relieved herself all over the floor, prompting the Humane Society watchdog on set to announce filming was over for the night.

It’s a good, solid summer movie that’s not just for teenagers; Catherine Hardwick (“Thirteen”;) directs in a convincing, involving style, clearly very much in tune with her young performers.
The best scenes are the skating sequences; Hardwick has found ways to film from unlikely perspectives—following the kids as they loop down a drainage canal, or from the front of the skateboards, or even, amazingly, from UNDER the skateboards, the wheels whining just in front of the camera lens.
Hardwick depicts the kids’ searches for empty swimming pools with great style and wit.

It also looks like James Tulley must have died in the Civil War, then Catherine Hardwick Tully married Prior Brim in 1866.

I got an E-mail from Mary Fargo who was a Nees and she found a James Nees born 1842 in Cumberland County married to Louisa Van Tassell born in Cumberland and died Feb. 1897.
