Catherine McCormack (Mel Gibson's ill-fated bride in Braveheart) delivers a star-making performance as the "dangerous beauty" who becomes a skillful courtesan to pursue her forbidden love for a dashing Venetian senator (Rufus Sewell).
But the movie's joyously ribald vitality is utterly irresistible, and the casting of McCormack with Jaqueline Bisset (as her mother and courtesan mentor) is a stroke of pure genius.
Catherine McCormack makes a ravishing lead in this costume drama that suffers somewhat from the incidental and fractured quality common to period costume dramas based largely on historical fact.

SPLICEDwire | "The Weight of Water" review (2002) Kathryn Bigelow, Catherine McCormack, Sean Penn
The film, released two years ago in Europe, is a character-driven dual narrative -- the story of a troubled couple spending a tense working vacation on a sailboat with the husband's brother and his enticing girlfriend, and the story of a century-old murder on the New England island where they're anchored.
The wife Jean (played by the wonderfully nuanced and inconspicuously beautiful Catherine McCormack) is an intellectual photographer whose assignment to take pictures of the island and the murder site for a magazine story is the reason for their trip, and the movie's passport into the past.
Aided by the understated but penetrating performances of the entire cast (especially Penn, McCormack and Polley, but surprisingly even Hurley, who is normally all sex appeal and no soul), the director brings the intricacies of her main characters' egos into such sharp relief that even their innermost feelings transcend the screen.

Catherine McCormack - Life after Braveheart
As Murron, the woman who swept William Wallace off his feet, Catherine McCormack suffered a grisly death in Braveheart, but the sweet-faced girt who starred alongside Mel Gibson emerged from the film to world-wide predictions that she would be the new Kate Winslet.
It’s part of the McCormack legend now that, despite a raft of offers, she didn’t work for eight months after Braveheart, except in the all-too-gritty role of barmaid in a west London pub.
She’s reportedly not overwhelmed by the script, which may be dangerously close to sentimental, but delighted to have an input to its evolution, a rare experience, she acknowledges, for an actor, who is more used to being dictated to by a director or a writer.

Well, hold on: the movie actually weaves back and forth with flashbacks as a double-murder from back in the day is studied by two modern day couples.
The contemporary folk are also very good, especially McCormack, the one leading the "investigation", as well as Penn, her husband, who plays a pretentious, flirtatious poet who does nothing but drink and smoke during the entire picture...how strange that he would sign on for something like that, eh?
The film also features the lovely Josh Lucas, playing Lucas with a smile and the even lovelier Elizabeth Hurley, cast ideally as the tramp, oops...I mean, "object of desire" on the boat.
