He was among the first astronomers to show that the spiral nebulae have absorption spectra typical of stars and thus differ from gaseous nebulae.

In 1968, Spitzer's dream of putting a telescope in space began to come true, with the launch of the highly successful Orbiting Astronomical Observatory.
