  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Catherine De' Medici
Catherine was obliged to allow the Guises to quell the conspiracy of Amboise, March, 1560, and for a few months to exercise a sort of Catholic dictatorship.
It was indeed a great period in Catherine's life: Charles IX who had attained his majority on the 27th of June solemnly declared to her that she should govern more than ever; the treaty with England, 11 April, 1564, assured Calais to France; and Catherine and the young king made a tour of the provinces.
Catherine, ever ambitious, laid claim to the crown of Portugal for a member of her family, and dreamed in vain of giving the crown of France to her daughter's son, the Marquis de Pont a Mousson; but the matter rested between the Guises and the Bourbons.

One of the most (in)famous royal players of the time was Queen Catherine de Medici of France, the Italian-born consort of the exciting and effective Henry II and the power behind the throne for her three weak king sons.
Caterina Maria Romola di Lorenzo de' Medici was born in Italy in 1519, and in 1533 was married to King Henry II of France.
Catherine followed the more traditional methods of the day to build, retain, and keep her power; Elizabeth, choosing to flout tradition, was forced into some of the same machinations Catherine used, even though she never married.

In any case, Diane and Catherine were contrasts in every sense; one aristocratic and proud, the other low-born and defensive; one charming as a Arthurian legend, the other without that one saving grace which would save her, as it has saved any beautiful woman past or present, from the cruelties of her male critics.
Catherine's time at the top was mostly concerned with supply convoys and the selling price of cattle, and was, in any case, brief.
Her nervous disposition was characteristic of most of Catherine's children; it was said that her hands would tremble when reading letters written in her mother's hand, even from the safe distance of Madrid.

SAINT CATHERINE LABOURE OF THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL
Even the feast of Catherine's baptism was prophetic, for Catherine was to "find" the Cross at every turning of her life, was to have a deep devotion for it, and was to see it in mysterious vision.
Catherine was French, and that meant that France was a passion with her, a thread of her life and her sanctity, weaving itself through her thoughts, her prayers, her good deeds, her visions.
Toward the end of 1828, at the very time Catherine came to Paris to work in her brother's cafe, he was recalled to Paris to bolster the little staff of nine priests who were struggling to keep the headquarters of the Community going, after the disasters of the Revolution and the wars of Napoleon.

Malaspina Great Books - Catherine de Medici (1519-1589)
Born 13 April, 1519; died 5 January, 1589; she was the daughter of Lorenzo de' Medici (II), Duke of Urbino, and Madeleine de la Tour d' Auvergne who, by her mother, Catherine of Bourbon, was related to the royal house of France.
Having brought to the French court only 100,000 ecus and a few poor appanages, Catherine was relegated to the background, where she remained even when, on the death of her husband's elder brother, she attained the dignity of Dauphiness.
The political interests that helped to set the religious factions at variance did not abate: the arrogance of the Huguenots exasperated the Catholics, and the Vassy massacre (March, 1562) opened the first religious war, which fact alone was a victory for the Guise policy and a defeat for that of the regent.

 Abstract - KATE CURREY
In 1606 the fifteen-year-old Margherita Gonzaga (daughter of the Italian duke Vicenzo of Mantua) was married to Henri, duc de Bar, heir to the duchy of Lorraine in north eastern France.
Henri's previous marriage, to the Protestant princess, Catherine de Bourbon, sister of King Henri IV of France had been intended to unite the duchy with royal France.
Not only had Catherine refused to renounce her Protestant faith (regarded as tantamount to heresy in Catholic Lorraine), but, in her early forties at the time of her marriage, had also failed to produce an heir.
