Breaking wheel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The breaking wheel (also known as Catherine wheel; originally, the whele) was a torturous capital punishment device used in the Middle Ages and early modern times for public execution by cudgeling to death.
The wheel itself was similar to a large wooden wagon wheel, with many radial spokes, but a wheel was not always used.
The wheel was made to slowly revolve, and a large hammer or an iron bar was then applied to the limb over the gap between the beams, breaking the bones.

 St. Catherine of Alexandria
Catherine, virgin and martyr, is honored in both the Western and Eastern churches on November 25, the traditional date of her martyrdom in Alexandria, Egypt.
Another statement made in the legend of St. Catherine is that before her death she had already reached the heights of contemplation, and in a vision of Mary and the Christchild had received the grace of being accepted by Him as His mystical spouse.
St. Catherine caught the fancy of everyday Christians and from the tenth to the eighteenth century, she was venerated as one of the fourteen most powerful saints (the "Fourteen Holy Helpers").

By using their influences as a mere launching pad and consistently developing their many strengths, Catherine Wheel was able to outlast all of their early peers.
With their initial singles and first album, the band from East Anglia fit snugly with the remainder of bands that the British press eventually labeled as shoegazers, a short-lived sub-scene of bands that were characterized by an inactive stage presence, loads of effects pedals, and buried vocals.
However, the always tuneful Catherine Wheel survived by refusing to repeat themselves and remaining accessible to their constantly swelling fanbase through touring like dogs.
