Cathexis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In psychodynamics, cathexis is defined as the process of investment of mental or emotional energy in a person, object, or idea.
In psychoanalysis, cathexis is the libido's charge of energy.
Freud often described the functioning of psychosexual energies in mechanical terms, influenced perhaps by the dominance of the steam engine at the end of the 19th century.

Arnold H. Modell, 'Cathexis revisited: Lessons from a neurobiology of meaning'
His final belief was that cathexis refers exclusively to a libidinal cathexis; the term also denoted certain a quantum of psychic energy.
The term cathexis is, as you know, a neologism invented by Freud's translator James Strachey to serve as a rendition of Freud's term Besetzen, but we are informed that Freud was unhappy with Strachey's neologism because of his dislike of technical terms (Laplanche and Pontalis, 1973).
Cathexis could then be understood as the conscious expression of an unconscious intentionality.

Int. Dictionary of Psychoanalysis | Cathexis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A key concept from the economic point of view, "cathexis" refers to the process that attaches psychic energy, essentially libido, to an object, whether this is the representation of a person, body part, or psychic element.
Implicit in Freud's early works, the idea of cathexis stems directly from the hypothesis of psychic energy.
As a result, "cathexis" is also used to refer to organizational psychic impulses, the interplay of symptoms and regressions, and the workings of attention and pain.

 Cathexis #2
The word "cathexis" means a concentration of psychic energy on some particular person, thing, idea or aspect of self.
Marilyn has taken this to mean a concentration of psychic energy on things like creativity, art, artist's books, collage, etc. Her result is the Cathexis zine, going on its third issue, that is eclectic but pointed in its focus, and a quick but enjoyable read.
In addition, there are some seemingly unrelated articles and projects -- such as making your own postcards, finding cool stuff at estate sales (and by the side of the road), and paper casting with, of all things, toilet paper (she even provides a sample).

Cathexis is our secret weapon in the struggle against the Lull, in the sense of the Lull as the "desire for desires." And with most of our elemental needs met in the twenty-first century West, boredom is fast becoming a cultural fact.
When paradise dawns, I expect things to be far less serious, in the way that superbowls are less serious than tribal bloodbaths, culture wars are less serious than world wars, and videogames are less serious than manmade disasters--- they are, though you wouldn't know by our reactions.
For this reason, it is the social responsibility of us troublemakers to spin new forms of cathexis--- to really finetune the art--- again before the new epoch arrives.

The term cathexis is used to describe an investment of libidinal energy in an object or an idea.
Sentimental attachment to a keepsake, a family heirloom, or a photograph would be an example of cathexis.
The word is derived from the Greek verb "to occupy" and is a translation of the German word Besetzung, "occupation." The image suggests that the libido is sent out to "seize" the external object, as an army would seize and occupy a city.

"Cathexis" does not choose one character to focus on, but throws them all together into a ridiculous plot that gives none of them enough to do.
From this point, "Cathexis" turns into a series of disjointed events with poorly executed plot handling.
The third act manages to work in elements of what seem to be the beginnings of a paranoid thriller, but the idea never gets off the ground outside of the one scene which introduces it.
