China recognizes only five religions -- including Christianity (which it subdivides into Catholcism and Protestantism), Buddhism, Islam and Taoism -- and has tried to control the numbers of believers through restrictions on worship and bans on proselytizing.
Belief in religion and health sects has soared in recent decades as social controls loosened and market reforms discredited communist ideology.
Somehow this widely varied experience combined with his native empathy for people and love of the soil to deliver a remarkably liberal and unfettered man to the head of the Roman Catholic church for a brief, but monumental, five years.
Cahill concludes with a negative, almost searing, overview of Pope John's successors including a pretty nasty picture of Pope John Paul II who he thinks represents a weird, Polish kind of Catholcism.
I can't comment on the fairness of that, but am encouraged that Cahill feels that the waters representing John's humanism and warmth run near the surface and will emerge again.
When he found her, she was engaged to another man. He then was able to convince Edith to break off that engagment and become engaged to him instead.
She converted to Catholcism and began wedding preperations.

No where does it say that both sides of this "debate" - Islam or Catholcism - have clean hands - Tours, the Siege of Vienna, the Crusades and the Inquisition are all dark spots on both sides.
So please don't start the "he hit me first" school of debate to justify why the subject cannot be broached for debate.
I served a mission to part of the "Bible Belt," and even there, most people didn't really care.
It would be far less important than JFK's Catholcism was, but he still won.

Between now and then would be a good time to start attending Mass and reading up on the faith.
There is a good book out there that I highly recommend (and easy reading too!) called Catholcism for Dummies (I think I spelled that first word wrong, but you get the picture).
Its very easy to read and very informative (if not a tad bit funny).
If there is a situation which is out of the order it should be in, it is Aset who steps in and rectifies it.
It is interesting to note that the shapeshifter is the one who survived the Egyptian empire, the Roman empire, Catholcism, and is still worshipped to this day.
Aset is closely associated with Serqet, also known as Selket, the scorpion goddess.
Christianity not only survived the fall of the Empire, but was adopted by the Germanic Tribes who conquered the Empire.
Italy became the center of Catholcism in Europe because of the growing primacy of the Papacy.
The Papacy also controlled a secular state in central Italy around Rome and was influential even in the other Italian states outside its secular control.
The priest went off on about a one hour sermon about how the Muslims are going to take over the planet unless we get off our asses and start converting every one of our neighbors to Catholcism.
Churches down here also advertise on the radio like a freakin' resort or something.
He expressed hope that such a movement might induce the media to broaden its focus beyond clerical disputes.
Since the Second Vatican Council in 1962, Weigel charged, press coverage of Catholcism has concentrated almost exclusively on a perceived liberal-conservative power struggle within the institutional Church.
While this framework can explain some things, Weigel said, it does not come close to explaining everything.
