  Politicization of the Eucharist
Par 3 Catholic ministers may lawfully administer the sacraments of penance, the Eucharist and anointing of the sick to members of the eastern Churches not in full communion with the catholic Church, if they spontaneously ask for them and are properly disposed.
The American Life League, in their full page advertisement in USA Today, June 16, 2004, referred to Canon 915 in an attempt to justify their demand that bishops prohibit politicians whom they deem to be “pro-abortion” from communion.
Recent statements by Catholic lobbyists in Maryland (relative to the sacrament of penance and mandatory reporting laws) and Missouri (relative to Medicaid legislation) are clear examples of attempts by official Catholic sources to mislead legislators and the general public for self-serving purposes.

His demeanor is representative of the ideological orientation of the Catholic League and the traditional modus operandi of the Catholic Orthodoxy in general: We are right and everyone else is wrong, and whoever disagrees with us must be silenced, by whatever means available.
We demand that the Catholic Church be portrayed exclusively as a humanitarian organization, and no mention be made of the fact that the worldview promoted by the Vatican through humanitarian aid is centuries out of date and a danger to the survival of the human species.
That the Catholic League felt the need to mount a boycot campaign against Miramax's parent company, Disney, demonstrates that the League is really nothing but a continuation of the Holy Roman Inquisition, a mean, vindictive guardian of ideological purity that seeks to silence dissent with the tenets of ultra-conservative catholicism.

 The Catholic Church (Harpers.org)
Many Roman Catholics were hoping that Pope John Paul II would use his absolute power in such matters to declare the Virgin Mary a co-redeemer with Jesus Christ; 6 million Catholics, including 550 bishops and 42 cardinals, have signed petitions beseeching the Pope to do so, which effectively would make the Virgin a god.
The Roman Catholic church agreed to pay $1.2 million to a woman in Los Angeles who was sexually abused by a priest when she was a teenager; in New York a priest was charged with raping a child.
Catholic dioceses in America were buckling under the financial strain of sex-abuse lawsuits; dioceses in Tucson, Arizona, and Portland, Oregon, had declared bankruptcy.

Nazi Policy and the Catholic Church
The Catholic Church, prime mover in this spiritual swindle, was singled out for sustained attack as the promoter of “prodigious, conscious and unconscious falsifications.” Rosenberg claimed that Jesus Christ had been an unwitting tool of Jewish world conspirators, active as early as the first century AD.
Responding to protests, he denied this was part of a deliberate campaign against Catholics; the government, he claimed, would “seal its own doom with such a policy.” Though the ban was lifted, it sent a warning tremor through the largely Catholic Rhineland, and gave an accurate indication of possible future government moves.
Continued pressure was brought to bear on thousands of Catholic civil servants who were threatened with disciplinary measures or dismissal unless their children were enrolled in the Hitler Youth or German Girls League (BDM).

Catholic Culture : Document Library : For the New Millennium: the Society of Catholic Social Scientists
The recent passing to the Lord of Cardinal John O'Connor marks a useful moment to examine the raison d'etre, history, progress and present state of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS), an organization that represents a small part of the Catholic restoration inspired by the Pontificate of John Paul II.
The two interrelated goals of the SCSS are: 1) to incorporate, where appropriate, Catholic philosophical/theological assumptions, issues, concepts and modes of interpretation into the social sciences and 2) to bring Catholic social doctrine into the American (and international) public square from which social policy is forged.
The ideas that it is necessary and possible both to develop a Catholic social science and to evangelize society with a Catholic presence were only two of the casualties suffered by Catholicism in the turbulent wake of the immediate post-Vatican II period.

 Catholic World News (CWN)
The superintendent of Catholics schools for the Orange diocese, Father Gerald M. Horan, said the parents’ demand is a “slippery slope” that could lead to the expulsion and ban of children whose parents divorced, used birth control or married outside the Church.
William Donohue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, sided with Father Horan, adding that the most important element to consider is the spiritual welfare of the children in question.  “On a prudential level, it makes no sense to single out kids for retribution whose parents are gay,” said Donohue.
The Catholic League might disagree but a columnist in the LA Times is very pleased with letting the boys go to the school---for reasons with which William Donohue probably would not agree.

 OSV STORY FOR JUNE 16
If a "virtual civil war" is raging between "conservative" and "modernist" Catholics in the United States, as a writer in the British Catholic weekly The Tablet recently suggested, it would be fair to say the modernists launched an offensive last month.
Calling themselves "We Are Church," roughly 20 groups on the far left of the Catholic ideological spectrum began a drive to obtain 1 million signatures over the next year on a petition calling for radical change in Catholic teaching and practice.
Since neither the Catholic League nor Fabrizio, McLaughlin can be accused of having a liberal bias, the results were more striking than some poll data periodically generated by Catholic groups on the left.

Roman Catholic sex abuse cases - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been suggested that the discipline of celibacy in the Catholic priesthood offers a means by which priests with sexual urges that are aimed towards children rather than adults can hide those tendencies, their lack of sexual feelings towards adults being unnoticeable in a completely unmarried clergy.
Catholic teaching affirms that so long as the officiant has been validly ordained, his personal sins have no effect on the validity of the Masses, absolutions, baptisms, and other sacraments he has administered.
Plaintiffs in the cases against the archdiocese have argued that the Catholic church is a single entity, and that the Vatican should be liable for any damages awarded in judgement of pending sexual abuse cases.

The Madison Catholic Herald -- March 4, 2004 Edition -- National / World News
Indeed, to discuss the incidence of sexual abuse committed by Roman Catholic priests without reference to the level of offense found among the clergy of other religions, or to that of other professionals, is grossly unfair.
It is the belief of the Catholic League that no meaningful conversation can take place on this issue without having some baseline data regarding the incidence of abuse that occurs outside the Catholic Church.
In another study by USA Today, it was determined that of the 234 priests who have been accused of sexual abuse of a minor while serving in the nation's 10 largest dioceses and archdioceses, 91 percent of their victims were males.

Some people — including not a few Catholics — use skepticism and mistrust of the Church as rationalizations for their own dishonesties of the intellect and the flesh.
In other cases, though, the skepticism and mistrust are lingering reactions generated by grave offenses against openness and accountability on the part of religious authorities stretching back many years.

Amazon.com: What Makes Us Catholic: Eight Gifts for Life: Books: Thomas H. Groome   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
He appears to be trying to assure Catholics who are disappointed with the state of their church in the wake of the reforming Second Vatican Council of the 1960s that it's still okay to be Catholic, even if they don't like the present pope and his vision for Catholic Christianity.
What really makes people Catholic, he argues, are such thematic elements as sacramentality and the Catholic view of "society's function as serving the common good." Groome's vision of Catholicism seeks to reveal a more palatable side of the church as an advocate of such social values as inclusiveness and concern for the poor.
Catholic Christianity is marked by an overwhelmingly positive attitude toward the human condition and the world.

Italian journalist calls for Catholic “Anti-defamation League”
Messori maintains that the number of attacks on Catholics in different media outlets is on the rise, and that often they are left unanswered mainly because of the lack of information, or even because of disinformation, on the part of Catholics with regards to the truth.
Messori says a “League” of this type should serve as an instrument for intervening in these kinds of matters, and that it should be supported by a group of lawyers.
A Catholic league, he says, could begin in Italy and become a model for similar type organizations in other countries.
