Traditionalist Catholic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sedevacantist Catholics believe that the Catholic Church has not had a true Pope for some time (most consider Pope Pius XII as the last true Pope) and, depending on the time they see as the moment the "Chair of Peter" became empty, may or may not see Vatican II as a valid Council.
Traditional Catholics believe, though, that errors have crept into the presentation and understanding of Catholic teaching, either because of liberal interpretations of Vatican II documents, and/or because of post-conciliar pastoral decisions that they believe have harmed the Church, and/or, as is believed by some, because of the Council's documents themselves.
They see their situation as comparable to that of traditional Catholics during the Arian heresy when the majority of Bishops were heretics or condoned heresy, and Catholics like Saint Athanasius (who was excommunicated by Pope Liberius and exiled from his see) were vilified yet ultimately canonized.

Traditional Catholics firmly support the papacy (even those who are sedevacantist firmly support the doctrines concerning the papacy), but they often accuse mainstream "conservative Catholics" of an attitude bordering on papolatry (pope worship) rooted in what they see as the latter's limited understanding of papal infallibility and the nature of Christian obedience.
Traditional Catholics see the Novus Ordo as being a fruit of this "Paschal theology" as it is marked by such things as the replacement of Altars with tables, a focus on "community" rather than the offering of the Son to the Father, and so on.
The sex scandals rocking the Catholic Church have not appeared to have affected this growth to any appreciable degree, though one sedevantantist 'pope' was arrested for child sexual abuse in the late 1990s in Canada.

This 'universal' interpretation is often used to understand the phrase 'One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church' in the Nicene Creed, the phrase 'the catholic faith' in the Athanasian Creed, and the phrase 'holy catholic church' in the Apostles Creed.
However, the Roman Catholic Church, which normally refers to itself simply as the Catholic Church, publishing in 1992 a 'Catechism of the Catholic Church', can basically be traced historically to the original Catholic or universal Church, from which various groups broke away over the centuries.
Although the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches in general do not view the Anglican Churches as truly 'Catholic', Anglicans themselves claim to have all the qualifications needed to be Catholic.

Traditional Catholic : Catholic ultratraditionalism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Traditional Catholic is a term used to describe the small minority of Roman Catholics who reject (for instance as modernistic) the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, especially what is sometimes called the Novus Ordo, that is new (or revised) rite of Mass.
They are to be distinguished from conservative Catholics who merely prefer the older Tridentine rite of Mass (established following the Council of Trent), without actually rejecting the Second Vatican Council and the reform of the order of Mass undertaken by Pope Paul VI and contained in a new edition of the Roman Missal.
The second group believe in the papacy but reject Pope Paul VI and his successors Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II as antipopes owing to their belief that these popes are heretics due to many of the Vatican II decrees and subsequent papal promulgations.

I am probably the last person who should be seeking to offer you spritual comfort, given my own disbelief, but I look at it this way: there are many reasons why one might doubt, but of these reasons those based on science carry little weight.
There are too many wonderful scientists who are also devout Catholics or sincere believers in other branches of christianity for me to claim that there is a fundamental conflict between science and faith.
I might as well say that reason and science destroy the basis of poetry or music as claim that faith is undermined by molecular biology.

One other group which falls under the definition of traditional Catholic would be the official government-sponsored Catholic Church of the People's Republic of China.
The underground Catholic Church in China does recognize the authority of the the Pope, and hence celebrating Mass using the new Roman Missal rather than the Tridentine Missal in China has political implications.
The relationship between the official church and the underground church (about 70% of whose members overlap) has greatly complicated relations between the PRC and the Holy See as well as been the focus of attention by human rights groups.

He did not issue any encyclicals that were socially oriented or were accepted into the tradition of Catholic social teaching.
"He held no brief for the ultratraditionalism of Pius X's era and did not resist efforts of social Catholics to experiment with new methods and original forms of organization." He wanted to expand the social program of the Church as much as he possibly could, but his contribution to Catholic social doctrine was not great.
During his short reign he had to deal with overwhelming problems, such as war, not directly related to the social question.
