The Metropolitan of India and the Metropolitan of China are mentioned in the consecration records of Patriarchs of the east.
The Catholicose is the supreme head of the Orthodox Church in India.
The present Catholicose is the 89th chronological successor to the Catholicate of the East founded by St. Thomas the Apostle in Seleucia, later revived in Tigris and relocated in 1912 in Kottayam.

In 1964, Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Yakoob III arrived in Malankara and ordained Mor Augen as Catholicose of the East-'Mor Baselios Augen I'.
But by the seventies, Catholicose Mar Augen under pressure from the extremists in his group, began to claim that he was sitting on the throne of St.Thomas and declared equality with his superior, the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East.
Mor Baselios Thomas I succeeds Mor Baselios Paulose II (died in 1996) as the Catholicose (Maphriyono) of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church.

 Catholicate of the East
Present headquarters of this ancient Maphrianate/Catholicate of the Syrian Orthodox Church is at Puthencuriz, Cochin, with Catholicose Mor Baselios Thomas I as the Chief of the Church in India.
This wing of the Orthodox Church in Kerala, India, originated in 1912 with the establishment of an autocephalous Catholicate for the section separated from the ancient Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Christian Community of Malabar.
The ‘Catholicose of Seleucia/East’ was the deputy of the Patriarch of Antioch with certain privileges including that of consecrating the Bishops on behalf of the Patriarch.

It is believed that the Apostle started his gospel mission in India, from a small town called "Malayankara" on the sea coast of 'Paravur' Taluk in Kerala, at a short distance away from Cranganore Port.
It is thus that, when about 400 Christian Settlers from Syria came over in AD 345 under the leadership of Thomas Kana, they, for want of anything better, started referring to all their surroundings as "Malankara" (Phonetically similar to 'Malayankara').
As per the latest census (2001), 1/4 th of the Christians in India are from its southern most state of Kerala.

The Supreme Court of India in its 1995 verdict had ordered the conduct of a Malankara association meeting to be attended by both factions after appropriate modifications to the constitution of 1934.

According to tradition, Christianity in India was established by St. Thomas who arrived in Malankara (Kerala) from Edessa in A.D. The close ties between the Church in Malankara and the Near East go back to at least the fourth century when a certain Joseph of Edessa traveled to India and met Christians there.
The local head of the church in Malankara is the Catholicose of India [His Beatitude Baselios Thomas I], ordained by and accountable to the Patriarch of Antioch.
