The Thing's collaboration with CSE began last summer at Kongsberg Jazz Festival in Norway, where this EP was recorded live, and continued with a studio recording that is supposed to be released later this year, as well as an upcoming Norwegian tour later this summer.
CSE's two guitarists manage to recreate Jimmy Page's huge, primitive guitar riff on “Whole Lotta Love,” which is still effective after more than thirty years, but it is clear that no singer can contest Robert Plant's vocal cords.
CSE's Bard Enerstad's organ adds a gospelish tinge to this quiet track, while Cato Salsa's gritty guitar pushes it to the edge.

Cato Salsa's real last name is Thomassen, but you didn't hear it from me. Similarly, Francis Moon is really Christian Engfelt and Jon E. Lugar is really Jon Magne Riise.
I knew this from the opening stomp of "Listen to Me Daddy'O," with its martial-arts drumcraft, Cato's troglodyte guitar stings, some wicked wild theremin work from Nina, and funky bassline and grunts by Francis that conjure up the Godfather of Soul his damn self.
Just remember the words of that great early American polymath, Benjamin Franklin: "The Cato Salsa Experience rocks like a mofo, and if you're too uncool to care about that then you can kiss my poor richard." He had a way with words, that one.

But don't let this put you off the Experience alltogether - this record is after all about having a good time, nothing more, nothing less, and tracks such as "Deadbeat" and "So, the Circus is Back in Town" certainly deliver as the record's title promises.

Cato Salsa Experience/ The Soundtrack of Our Lives
Yet Norway's Cato Salsa and Sweden's Soundtrack both manage to avoid the obvious with sandblasting, careening collaged elements to make their moody mod-ness modern.
Titles like "Listen To Me Daddy'O" and "Time To Freak Out!" are misleading -- Cato is the bolder, brasher band here, thrashing powerfully and hyperactively through needle-in-the-red rhythms, distorted screams and heavy guitars on A Good Tip for a Good Time (Emperor Norton).
Luckily, they stop the fuzztone freak-fest long enough to find anthemic melodies ("So, the Circus Is Back in Town," "Got Soul if You Want It") that Jon Spencer would kill for.
