  Bromeliad Biota - Carniverous Bromeliads
Catopsis berteroniana At least two bromeliads seem to have evolved a greater ability to trap insects and to gain a substantial proportion of their diet from this source.
A waxy powder which coats the leaf bases, and to a lesser extent the leaf blades, of the plant, may provide the means of entrapment (3,6).
Its leaves, too, produce a waxy powder which, as in Catopsis berteroniana, seems to prevent escape of trapped insects (5).

These plants have just used the urn that is a fundamental part of the structure of a bromeliad for a new purpose, and built on it by the production of wax, enzymes and the other paraphernalia of carnivory.

The Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park is Florida's richest center of epiphyte biodiversity and home to the state's rarest species of bromeliads (Catopsis berteroniana, Catopsis floribunda, Catopsis nutans, Guzmania monostachia, Tillandsia flexuosa, Tillandsia pruinosa).
Eleven of Florida's sixteen species of native bromeliads (airplants) are at risk from attack by Mexican bromeliad weevil (Metamasius callizona), and all are found in the Fakahatchee Strand.
Catopsis nutans is found nowhere else in Florida, and several other rare bromeliads are found in few places outside of the Fakahatchee Strand.

One of my friends then had to go home, but two of us headed further north through the state of Roraima to southern Venezuela, where we found so many CP species (around 30) that I won’t even list them.
A few highlights were Heliamphora heterodoxa, Genlisea guianensis, Brocchinia reducta, Catopsis berteroniana, and six species of Drosera.
And we didn’t even climb any of the famous tepuys, everything was found in the savanna-like plains of the Gran Sabana, between 1100 and 1450m in altitude.

According to a 1997 paper, "Adaptations in Fakahatchee," by D.F. Austin, Ph.D., director of environmental sciences at Florida Atlantic University, rare orchids found in the strand include the tiny orchid (Lepanthopsis melanantha), hidden orchid (Maxillaria crassifolia), and ghost orchid.
Rare bromeliads found in the strand include the fuzzy-wuzzy air plant (Tillandsia pruinosa,) which grows on pond apple trees, the nodding catopsis (Catopsis nutans), and the powdery catopsis (Catopsis berteroniana).
Although the strand has seen its share of logging activity and some attempts to drain the wetlands, many of the natural features are still present.

Mexican bromeliad weevil - Metamasius callizona (Chevrolat)
In Mexico, the weevil has been reported on Aechmea mexicana Baker, Catopsis sp.
The weevil has also been observed attacking Tillandsia balbisiana Schultes (a species that had been listed already in Florida as threatened) and Tillandsia flexuosa Swartz (already listed as endangered), as well as Catopsis and Guzmania spp.
The weevil, which appears to be restricted to plants large enough to supply an adequate amount of stem tissue for larval development, has been found most often in large species of Tillandsia.
