The cat sharks or catsharks are a large ((biology) a taxonomic group containing one or more genera) family (Scyliorhinidae) of (Any of numerous elongate mostly marine carnivorous fishes with heterocercal caudal fins and tough skin covered with small toothlike scales) sharks, with over 110 ((biology) taxonomic group whose members can interbreed) species recorded.
Cat sharks may be distinguished by their elongated (Feline mammal usually having thick soft fur and being unable to roar; domestic cats; wildcats) cat-like eyes and two small (Unpaired median fin on the backs of fishes and some other aquatic vertebrates that help to maintain balance) dorsal fins set far back.

 Dogfish or Catshark?
Both are typically smallish (1 to 4 feet or 30 to 120 centimetres), bottom-associated elasmobranchs sharing a similar 'sharky' shape and some of the most familiar forms occur together in coastal habitats.
Adding to the confusion, some catsharks (especially those of the genus Scyliorhinus) are often referred to as "dogfishes".
In addition, dogfishes are generally rather drab creatures (gray above, paler below) but many catsharks are boldly and attractively patterned (the back may be marked with any combination of stripes, bars, blotches, and spots — often in various shades of brown, orange, or yellow).

This is due partly to their nocturnal lifestyle and deep-water habitats; some species are found a depth of more than 2000 m while others can be found in shallow sheltered bays.
It can be difficult to differentiate between species of catsharks due to similarities in colouring and patterns as well as overlapping ranges with both shallow and deep water species.
