In contrast to the Adirondack Park, the Catskill Park does not include all the land generally considered to be part of the Catskill Range.
An era dominated by hotels such as the Catskill Mountain House at North-South Lake which catered to the well-to-do and socially prominent was passing its prime, and in its place outdoor recreationists were becoming interested in dry-fly fishing the trout streams, hunting and hiking the mountains.
However, the trails built by the state rapidly fell into disuse, Raymond H. Torrey would note by the end of the decade as what hikers there were tended to bypass the Catskills, which they regarded as passé, in favor of the Adirondacks and higher peaks in northern New England.

Coyotes, bears, bobcats, minks and fishers are some of the more secretive residents of the Catskills, but coyotes are often heard and some of the 400 bears that live in the region are spotted, even though they generally avoid people.
The gray sandstones of the area formed some 360-400 million years ago when the Catskill region was a shallow sea filling up with clay and silt washing off the high mountains to the east.

 Parks rules may undergo major changes next year
The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which manages 280,000 of the 750,000 acres in the park, hopes to release the draft of its new organizational plan for the park by the end of the summer.
The DEC plans to formally release the Catskill State Park master plan sometime next year, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the park.
A common gripe among Catskill Park advocates was that the DEC main office in Albany "faced north" - meaning it DEC paid more attention to the larger Adirondack State Park.

The Plan notes that the current Catskill Park State Land Master Plan (CPSLMP) allows unrestricted use of mountain bikes in the Forest Preserve and that future revisions of the CPSLMP may include restrictions on bike use in wilderness areas.

In the center of the region, along the state highway which is the main access to the Catskill State Park, in the midst of the highest peaks of the Catskills (including Belleayre Mountain, the area's major tourist facility), lie the Towns of Shandaken and Middletown.
In 1885, in response to excessive clearing of the mountain tops, the Catskill State Forest Preserve was established by the New York State Legislature to preserve as "forever wild" state lands within the preserve.
