The Catskill Park is a mountainous region of public and private lands in Ulster, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan Counties - the "forest preserve" counties.
Coyotes, bears, bobcats, minks and fishers are some of the more secretive residents of the Catskills, but coyotes are often heard and some of the 400 bears that live in the region are spotted, even though they generally avoid people.
The gray sandstones of the area formed some 360-400 million years ago when the Catskill region was a shallow sea filling up with clay and silt washing off the high mountains to the east.

The Catskills have few lakes (except for New York City’s reservoirs) and most mountains are very steeply sloping with frequent lines of cliffs as you travel up the mountains.
The Catskill Park was created in 1885 to protect New York City’s water supplies (many of the city’s reservoirs are in the Catskills with underground aqueducts running water southward to the city), and to provide outdoor recreational activities for the public.
About half of the Catskill Park is publicly owned, the other half is privately owned, thus like the Adirondack Park, the Catskills are one of the few “parks” that is a mix of private and public lands.

 The Frommers - Catskills
The Catskills were the Jewish version of the country club or first class on the ocean liner.
The tone is mildly self-congratulatory, but there are hints of a darker side: atrocious working conditions for hotel staff, the shadow of a Mafia presence, the sexual loneliness of wives whose husbands worked weekdays in "the city" and who frequently found fleeting consolation with college-boy waiters and busboys.
In their heyday in the 1940s and '50s, the Catskills, in New York's Sullivan and Ulster counties, were less a place than a state of mind, according to the Frommers.
