Topic: Cattewater

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

Plymouth, the Dutton and Captain Edward Pellew
In 1760, six of nine warships anchored in the Sound were dismasted and six merchant vessels wrecked in the Cattewater.
The ship was making a run for the shelter of the Cattewater but hit the shoal of rocks now under the Mount Batten Breakwater and lost her rudder.
Thus rendered unmanagable, she crashed on to the sharp rocks under the Citadel ramparts and but for the valour and strong sense of one man, all of them would have been lost.

Plymouth, Royal Air Force Mount Batten (RAF Mount Batten) (RAF Cattewater)
It is not clear when the area ceased to be used for military flights but the Chelson Meadow race-course was certainly used by civilian flyers such as Sir Alan Cobham.
Meanwhile, down river at the Cattewater a seaplane base had been established on September 2nd 1913 and several trial flights were made from it.
It was expected that this was the end of the base but in 1923 the Cattewater Seaplane Station Bill became enacted and the base re-opened on October 1st 1928 as RAF Mount Batten.

If you look across the Cattewater from the Barbican you can see the huge hangars that used to be part of R.A.F. Mountbatten. The whole site was handed back to the Council some years ago, and now thriving marine buisenesses occupy the hangars and yuppie housing occupies the land where the air base used to be.
However as the decade wore on a modest expansion in the role of the seaplane saw Mountbatten return to full operation, and on October 1 1928 Cattewater Station was renamed Mountbatten and that is the way things have stayed up till the present day.

Logical though this explanation may be, derived as it is from the French for cat and water, one wonders where Brewer found his information for it doesn't appear in any local maps or histories.
Curiously though the first reference to either Cattedown or Cattewater appears in records from 1249, before record of any castle.
The early form is simply la Catte, which undoubtedly has a French flavour but consensus seems to be that the name originally referred to a physical land feature, a cat-like one, and not unlike the "Bear" that was once on the water's edge off the Cattewater.
