Interestingly, in the aftermath of Copan's lost war [where Cauac Sky of Quirigua captured and sacrificed 18 Rabbit of Copan], the type of monumental strategy pursued by Smoke-Imix and 18-Rabbit was perpetuated at Quirigua.
Cauac Sky's design for Quirigua's Great Plaza is strongly reminiscent of Copan's; his assembly of stelae, concentrated in this location, seems to reflect something of an appropriation of his former overlord's most important monumental work.
The plaza of this small site is majestic, presenting the visitor with an expanse of level courtyard that the towering stelae--the tallest soars to nearly 35 feet--separated into areas of enclosure and sweeping processional spaces.

Quirigua's growth in prestige and power during Cauac Sky's reign seems to have been based on its control of the rich trade along the Motagua valley route, a corridor for the transport of jade and obsidian from their highland sources to the Caribbean coast.
Quirigua's rise to power is dramatically reflected in the archaeological record by a massive building program that transformed a former small residential compound into a large "royal" administration center for the lower Montagua valley.
After Cauac Sky's death in 784 A.C. the power of Quirigua was maintained, if not increased, well into the 9th century A.C. by a succession of rulers whose reigns were relatively brief.

The Bacabs were four four gods of the people of Yucatan in Central America, who were supposed to stand one at each corner of the world supporting the firmament.
Their names were Kan, Muluc, Ix and Cauac, representing respectively the east, north, west and south, their symbolical colours being yellow, white, fl and red, although the assignment of these colours was not altogether uniform.
Such a dedication of colours to the cardinal points is common in Central Asia, as witness the names of the Red Sea, Black Sea, Yellow Sea (Persian Gulf) and White Sea or Mediterranean.

But 13 years later, Cauac Sky defeated 18 Rabbit in battle and sacrificed him, bringing Quiriguá independence and a rise to prominence that lasted until at least 810, the city's last recorded date.

 Dreamspell Origins Investigated
Then it is mentioned that 2 Ix was the year-bearer in 1595, and "the year-bearer for 1596-1597 will be 3 Cauac followed by year-bearer 4 Kan..." This agrees with the list of year-bearers given in the Cuceb section.
So, it seems that the Dreamspell count was supposed to be based on the correlation given in the Cuceb section of the Chilam Balam of Mani, in which the New Year of 15th August 1596 (0-2 Pop) equates to 3 Cauac, (correlation #584315), but the first mistake was to equate the year-bearer to 21st July.
