Caudillo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The related caudillismo is a cultural phenomenon that first appeared during the early 19th century in revolutionary South America, as a type of militia leader with a charismatic personality and enough of a populist program of generic future reforms to gain broad sympathy, at least at the outset, among the common people.
Caudillos were capable of commanding large numbers of people and holding the attention of large crowds with growing excitement.
The Spanish dictator Francisco Franco used from 1936 the title "Caudillo de España, por la gracia de Dios," instead of "Führer" and "Il Duce." English speakers are reluctant to use the term "caudillo," which they imagine must have pejorative connotations; in Spain, it resounded of the old warriors of history.

Since the caudillos represented the mobilization of the masses on the provincial level, the struggle for state and municipal autonomy against a grasping central government, writers easily came to equate caudillism with anarchy, because they had already equated the masses with anarchy.
My argument, then, is that we have made the caudillo into the fetish--the independent force that we assume operates on its own with scarcely any support structure, autonomous and independent--and have failed to ask where the caudillo came from, what systems supported caudillism, what value it had.

Franco was born in Ferrol, Galicia, Spain on December 4, 1892.
He was sibling to Nicolás Franco Bahamonde, navy officer and diplomat; a sister, Pilar Franco Bahamonde, the latter a well-known socialite; and another brother, Ramón Franco, a pioneer aviator who was hated by many of Franco's supporters.
During his youth he suffered at the hands of his aggressive, alcoholic father, and it is argued by many that these experiences in his early years are what set him on the road to the atrocities he was responsible for in later life.
