Topic: Caudron IV

  Caudron G.IV
The Caudron G.IV was produced in response to an Aviation Militaire request for a more powerful Army Coordination aircraft capable of carrying a forward firing machine gun.
A second engine was added and the central nacelle was lengthened to allow for a nose gunner, and the number of rudders was increased from two to four.
The armament consisted of a 7mm Hotchkiss or Lewis gun on a flexible mounting.

The Roseplane Caudron G.III (a very nice vac kit IMHO) has a two piece assembly to represent this.
Doesn't look very easy to do, but I'm sure that the results are worth the effort, judging from the results that ex-listee Andrei Koribanics achieved.
This is one of the rare occasions on which a WW1 wing design can't be represented by a single vacformed surface.

In Act IV, Scene iii, Lines 26 - 29, a prisoner by the name of Barnardine is approached by the stoically funny executioner, Abhorson and Pompey, the clown.
This is a soberingly true statement not only for Isabella but for the audience as well, who lives in a real world consisting of such similar malcontents and crimes that they cannot help but empathize.

The twin-engined Etendard II, IV and VI were developed in parallel, the II for the Armee de l'Air, the VI for a NATO strike fighter requirement, and the IV as a private venture.
The Etendard IV, which was larger and more powerful than the other two versions, was developed in the Etendard IVM carrier-borne strike aircraft for the French Aeronavale.

 Les Avions Caudron
A detailed history of the early years of the Caudron brothers and their aircraft is particularly fascinating for its multitude of fl and white photos, most of which were quite new to me. The first chapters cover the individual models of the A to O series.
A separate chapter deals with the G models (G.II G.III and G.IV) built in quantity during the 1914-18 War, and another covers the later 3-seater 'fuselage' machines of the R series used until the end of that war.
The little Caudron G.III was a particularly widely used machine, at first on general reconnaissance duties and artillery spotting, but later relegated to training because of its reliability and ease of piloting.

The French Caudron G.III was a two seat, single-engined tractor biplane, with a twin-boom tail.
The end of the lower booms was used as a landing skid.
There were 50-60 G.III's at Tours in the fall of 1917, approximately 12 at Tours in January 1918, and about 42 G.III's and G.IV's available at Tours by February 1918.

As the enemy neared, the German recognized it as a French Caudron G.IV, a queer-looking machine with a twin-boom lattice tail section and a truncated tub between the plane's two engines carrying the pilot and observer.
As the German pilot reached for the firing button on the joystick, his mouth became dry at the prospect of his first aerial battle.
The E.III produced terror among Allied pilots out of all proportion to its capabilities, creating what was known as the "Fokker Scourge," until more advanced Allied fighters, such as the agile French Nieuport 11 and Britain's Airco DH.2, tipped the scales in the Allies' favor.
