In Cabaret Fosse uses many techniques to convey his message that escapism is dangerous for the individual and as a society as a whole.
We are most definitely shown that the cabaret is where people escape from their troubles when the MC tells his audience to leave their troubles outside.
She is self-centred and is so caught up in the cabaret lifestyle she chooses to live that she does not know what is happening around her.

Caught in a Cabaret (1914)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
It's rather chaotic (at least in the form in which it has survived), but "Caught in a Cabaret" includes some good material.
It is also interesting to see some of the plot themes (identity mix-ups, interplay between different classes) that Chaplin would use in more refined ways in his later comedies.

Winner of eight Academy Awards, Cabaret brings 1931 Berlin to madcap and menacing life inside and outside the Kit Kat Club.
There, starry-eyed singer/actress Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and an impish emcee (Joel Grey) sound the clarion call to decadent fun, while in the streets a certain political party grows from laughing stock to brutal force.
Cabaret caught lightning for Minnelli, Grey and director Bob Fosse, who shaped a triumph of style, showmanship and substance.

Mabel's father, Claude Normand, at one time was a small theater and club pianist, and all her life Mabel showed a love and devotion to music.13 This is reflected overtly in a number of her films.
In "Hot Stuff," "A Strong Revenge" and "Mabel Lost and Won" we see her dancing; playing piano in "Troublesome Secretaries," or singing "Caught in A Cabaret." Like Chaplin, the changeability of her gestures and emotions have a recognizably musical quality.
A comparison might be to dancing in which a dancer's physical movements change to the movement and beat of the melody and rhythm.

I figured since Jim Nemeth is keeping a diary of his experiences as producer and director of "CAUGHT IN A CABARET", it would be kinda interesting to have an improviser in the show also keep a diary to give a different perspective of the creative process.
Well, we’re three weeks into rehearsal for "CAUGHT IN A CABARET" (henceforth Cabaret) and I’ve never been so excited, inspired and frustrated with the creative process of writing and improvising a show as I have been with the genesis of Cabaret--but if doing a show was easy, anyone would do itÂ…
This is only the second show that I’ve improvised with her and I can’t wait to do a couple of scenes with her (as long as the scenes don’t involve a wiffle-ball bat).
