  Julian: Urechis caupo research
caupo in one square meter of mudflat can collectively pump 23,000 l of seawater per day through their burrows, of which 13,000 l is filtered through the mucus net.
Urechis caupo is one of only a few tube-dwelling animals that capture suspended food particles with a secreted mucous net.
The proboscis is held upright in the center of the burrow and a series of large peristaltic waves, generated by contractions of the muscular body wall, are initiated.

Caupo is depicted as a restless dreamer, but the ultimate object of his longings is Agita, the daughter of a Semgallian leader, Viesturs, and the wife of Caupo's friend, Imanta.
Scene 1, for instance, between Caupo and Ako, an elder and a sage, is played at a Livonian pagan sanctuary, while Scene 2 between Caupo and Dietrich, the German monk responsible for teaching Caupo about Christianity, happens in a cell dominated by a picture of the Virgin Mary.
Caupo, recognizing person, knocks the sword out of reach, however, angrily for his allies, the German soldiers, and orders Agita and his son to be chained.

As is typical, all homodinucleotides and homotrinucleotides are greatly over represented relative to a random distribution and CG is the least frequent dinucleotide, both in absolute number and in the ratio of observed to expected.

They claim descent from Caupo of Turaida, the Livonian quasi rex who converted to Christianity in 1186, when Bishop Meinhard attempted to Christianize the region.

Caupo's grandson, Nicholas, was the first to spell his name Lieven.

In many spiralian organisms (such as annelids, molluscs and echiurans) the establishment of normal body symmetry during development is dependent upon the specification of cells within the D-quadrant.
The mechanism of axis specification utilized in the marine echiuran worm Urechis caupo was investigated by treating developing embryos with an extracellular matrix perturbant, monensin.

Adult and juvenile leopard sharks feed upon fat innkeeper worms (U. caupo), anchovids (A. mordax), staghorn sculpin, (L. armatus) and crabs (P. crassipes; H. oregonensis).
Most common from Spring through Fall this is perhaps the most recognizable species of shark or ray in the slough.
Within the Elkhorn Slough leopard sharks feed primarily on Urechis caupo, however, fish eggs, crustaceans and fish are a consistent part of their diet.

HMS Student Papers 1993 - Multixenobiotic resistance and its relationship to toxins in the habitat of Urechis caupo
Abstract: The echiuroid worm Urechis caupo is one of the many marine invertebrates that is able to live and reproduce in a polluted environment.
These data support the role of MXR as a protective mechanism for marine invertebrates, suggest bioassays for pollutants, and propose that the phenomenons of hormesis and multixenobiotic resistance are related.

he pudgy "fat innkeeper" worm Urechis caupo, which looks more like a frankfurter than a worm, tunnels through the salty mudflats of Elkhorn Slough, California.
MDR pumps are being discovered in almost every organism searched, including Urechis caupo that calls polluted, toxin-laden mud home, says Stanford University embryologist David Epel.
Detecting traces of MDR in such a wide array of organisms is leading scientists like Epel to believe that this line of defense has persisted for a long, long time in biology, usually the signature of a very important molecule.
