Cavalleria rusticana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cavalleria rusticana ("Rustic Chivalry") is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to a libretto by Targioni-Tozzetti and Menasci, adapted from a short story by Giovanni Verga.
After a short pause, Santuzza, followed by a crowd of women, rushes upon the stage, and with the stark cry of "Turiddu is dead," the opera ends abruptly.
Cavalleria rusticana, though it appears melodramatic by modern standards, is one of the few verismo operas that have consistently remained in the repertory.

 Cavalleria Rusticana
He remembered the drama by Verga, Cavalleria Rusticana, that he had seen at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan in 1884; for the libretto he turned to two men from Livorno, the writer Giulio Menasci (1867-1925) and the journalist-poet Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (1863-1934).
In March 1890 Cavalleria Rusticana was proclaimed joint winner of the competition along with two other operas, Labilia by Nicola Spinelli and Rudello by Vincenzo Ferroni: the audience of the Teatro Costanzi would decide which was the best.
On 17th May Cavalleria Rusticana was performed, conducted by Leopoldo Mugnone, a very well-known conductor who had been chosen for all three operas.

Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, after the story by Giovanni Verga, with libretto by Targioni-Tozzetti, premiered in Rome at the Teatro Costanzi on May 17, 1890.
Cavalleria Rusticana (or 'Rustic Chivalry') and Pagliacci ('Players') are virtually always paired, and it is easy to see why.
There are also stylistic similarities, such as the syncopated string accompaniments to some arias, the positioning of the main choruses (and the amount of chorus work), the standard harmonies and orchestrations and the use of the intermezzos all serve to make these two operas, of similar lengths, ideal programme partners.

Cavalleria Rusticana: melodramma in one act, libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci after the novella and the play of the same name by Giovanni Verga, music by Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945), first performed 17th May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome, with the following cast:
His friend and librettist Targioni-Tozzetti, however, after seeing the play, suggested 'Cavalleria Rusticana' and Mascagni - who had been present at the Milan premiere of the play some years earlier, and who had been fascinated by the subject, agreed to start afresh.
Mascagni worked feverishly up to 18 hours a day to meet the deadline set by the Casa Sonzogno, and on 6th May 1890 the jury shortlisted his 'Cavalleria Rusticana', Niccolò Spinelli's 'Labilia' and Vincenzo Ferrari's 'Rudello' for performances at the Teatro Costanzi later that month.

Since that day, as the "Cavalleria Rusticana" has made its triumphant progress around the world, the Romans have taken great credit to themselves for having known a masterpiece when it was set before them.
The "Cavalleria" was presented at the beautiful Teatro Goldoni, which had its accommodations taxed to the utmost for several nights.
The work is not one to displace the "Cavalleria" in the affection of Mascagni's fellow countrymen, but it was highly praised and declared to possess many passages, both for the voice and in the instrumental part, which were novel, individual, and of a very high character of artistic merit.

The Music of Cavalleria Rusticana - Mascagni
"Cavalleria Rusticana" (Rustic Chivalry) has had much adverse criticism as well as generous appreciation; as to its success there can be only one opinion.
In "Cavalleria" the melody is not always original, it is occasionally reminiscent of other composers; but there is quite enough true inspiration to show that the composer need borrow from no one, while dramatic force and power of declamation are prominent features of the work.
The orchestral prelude at once sounds the note of tragedy, preparing the listener for the stormy drama to follow.

 Opera - Cavalleria Rusticana
" Cavalleria Rusticana," or " Rustic Chivalry," is an opera in one act with words by Targioni-Tozzetti and Menasci, after the tale of the Sicilian novelist, Verga, and with music by Pietro Mascagni.
It is said to have been written in a week, and virtually in a day it lifted its young composer from obscurity to world-wide fame.
Mascagni, who at the time of the composition of " Cavalleria Rusticana," was only twenty-seven years of age, had the distinction of founding with his work a new school of opera, the " verissimo " school, with flesh and blood characters whose deeds follow the logic of passionate human nature.

This, one of the archetypal verismo operas (the other is its Siamese twin, Cavalleria Rusticana) delivers a particularly hard and accurate punch from Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, Tullio Serafin, and--oh, all right--Giuseppe Di Stefano.
Callas' tone quality was ideal for verismo opera, and Cavalleria being the first operatic role she ever studied (at the tender age of 14!), I think it is safe to say that her interpretation was solid, as well as her vocal technique.
