Most the regiments raised for King William's war were disbanded by 1698, and when he died in 1702 he was beginning to rebuild the army to meet the French challenge in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Two regiments commanded by colonels Howard were distinguished as the Buff Howards and the Green Howards from the colour of their facings, and the units eventually came to be officially known as The Buffs and The Green Howards.
Cavalry in the 18th and 19th centuries were "heavy" (dragoon guards) and "light" (dragoons), according to the type of horse and equipment.

 African American Registry: Cavalry forms Buffalo Soldiers
These were the Buffalo Soldiers, a nickname given to members of African-American cavalry regiments of the U.S. Army who served in the western United States until 1896, mainly fighting Indians on the frontier.
Later in 1866, the 9th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Greenville, Louisiana and the 10th Cavalry Regiment was activated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and the 38th through 41st infantries (these four were later reduced to the 24th and 25 infantries), which often fought alongside the cavalry regiments.
In 1944, the end came to the cavalry regiments and the curtain was lowered on the long and glorious past of the "Buffalo Soldiers." The Baltimore Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Association hosted the 132nd Anniversary Reunion in 1998.

The only really effective use of cavalry by McClellan was as part of a combined force operation commanded by G. Warren toward Hanover Courthouse in June 1862 which led to the destruction of bridges over the North Anna and caused Jackson to be late for the opening of the 7 days' battles.
My opinion is that Little Mac's misuse of the cavalry cost its development at least a year and a half, and is the reason why Stuart rode rings (literally) around him until March 1863, when the Battle of Kelly's Ford was fought on March 17.

 History of the 1st & 2nd Maine Cavalry Regiments
The regiment arrived at Washington, DC, on the 4th of September, and was attached to Burnside's Corps, participating, on the 12th, in the engagement at Frederick, MD, where the regiment (with the exception of Companies G. M and H) remained encamped, Colonel Allen receiving the appointment on Military Governor.
The regiment was relieved from duty at Frederick, MD, on November 2nd, and December 11th was assigned to General Bayard's Cavalry Brigade at Falmouth, VA, afterwards commanded by General Gregg, under whose command the regiment remained until February 20th 1863, when it was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Colonel J. Kilpatrick commanding.
On the 15th of September the regiment was attacked by a large force of the enemy, and after a gallant resistance was compelled to retreat, losing heavily in killed and a large number being taken prisoners.
