Caving - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Caving is often undertaken solely for the enjoyment of the activity or for physical exercise, but original exploration is an important goal for many cavers.
Knots commonly used in caving are the figure-of-eight- (or figure-of-nine-) loop, bowline, alpine butterfly, and Italian hitch.
In some caves it may be acceptable to mark a small number of key junctions with small stacks or "cairns" of rocks, or to leave a non-permanent mark such as high-visibility flagging tape tied to a projection.

 Hidden Cave, Nevada
Hidden Cave was rediscovered in the 1920s, and teams of archaeologists excavated there in the 1940s, 1950s, and late 1970s.
Because nobody could actually have lived inside the cave, it seems clear that the rich artifact assemblage buried inside must have been deliberately stored away, carefully cached for the future rather than discarded as garbage.
Digging inside Hidden Cave was no picnic, as three generations of archaeologists can readily attest.

Digging Through Solid Earth: One of the more foolhardy tasks unless you know a cave exists under a particular spot, this is the most labor (or energy) intensive type of digging.

Cave location in Schoharie County, New York is often carried out on an inferred basis, because the bedrock is generally mantled by a thick cover of glacial sediment which plugs active insurgences and resurgences and buries abandoned ones.
Actual entry and cave exploration involves competing with glacial sediment and water for use of the active insurgences and resurgences.
Exploration of cave conduits is impeded by glacial sediment which blocks the abandoned upper levels and causes water to pond in the lower, active passages.

 Accessing Cosquer Cave
French researchers have rejected the idea of digging an entrance to the Grotte Cosquer, a Palaeolithic painted cave near Marseilles, after climatological study revealed that doing so might jeopardize its paintings and engravings, some of the world's oldest cave art (see "World's Oldest Cave Art," May/June 1993).
Studies by the Labortoire de Récherches des Monuments Historiques in Champs-sur-Marne, France, revealed that the cave's atmosphere is under pressure, and that if conditions are changed its water level might rise, flooding some of the rock art.
Though the climatological studies have ensured that few will ever see the paintings up close (underwater access to the cave is extremely treacherous), dives organized by the French Ministry of Culture in past years have identified 41 more engraved animals and one painted one, bringing the total number of such images to 142.

Nick Cave interviewed on official website of Laura Hird   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Nick Cave had an epiphany of his own while watching the ‘Johnny Cash Show’ on television as a youngster — the sight and sound of the original gangsta gave him the first indication that music could be, as he put it, evil.
Johnny Cash’s spirit is very much present on Cave and The Bad Seeds’ new double album ‘Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus.’ ‘Let The Bells Ring’ is on the face of it a requiem song for Cash, although as its author explains, the original draft was a grander affair.
Indeed, these days Cave is becoming increasingly determined to avoid getting bogged down in the tedium of the recording process.
