The cave's isolated location encouraged vandals to break into the closed caves and, in 1911, the management of the Cave of the Winds decided to dynamite the cave's entrance shut to protect the cave.
The new attraction was located within the city limits of Manitou and was next to the road leading to Cave of the Winds.
The Cave of the Winds closed the cave to the public (perhaps even dynamiting the entrance shut), but permitted an Indian, Pedro Cajete of New Mexico, to live in the small entrance building for several summers after the cave closed.

 Cave of the Winds - a History
The cave was an overhanging ledge of Lockport Dolostone rock at the top portion of the gorge which originally protruded more than 100 feet over which flowed the waters of the Bridal Veil Falls.
During the afternoon of Sunday August 2nd 1857, a rock fall occurred near the cave of the Winds, falling onto a group of tourists at the base of the gorge.
The overhanging ledge of Dolostone which had protected tourists entering the Cave of the Winds from the water of the Falls was in serious danger of collapsing.

September, 1908 - A large New York City syndicated began negotiations to purchase the Cave of the Winds, along with Seven Falls, and the Cliff Dwellings, the selling price for the Cave alone was about $200,000; the entire deal was over $500,000.
The three owners of the cave had run into severe financial difficulty, as they were also developing a new addition to the city of Manitou, an inclined railway to the top of Red Mountain and an arrangement to charge admission to Rainbow Falls along Fountain Creek, a local landmark which had previously been free.

We took a Circleline tour of New York Harbor passing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island which was supported by an informative commentary.
Incidentally, the falls are claimed to be the highest in New York State.
