 The Milling-Around Theory of Speleogenesis
It is clear that the experienced cavers are performing a deliberate milling-around rite primarily because novice cavers rarely participate in this phase of milling-around.
The net result is a period of intensive milling-around commencing when the first caver starts to assemble gear, and culminating when the last caver (often the most experienced in the group) is finally fully dressed.
Obscenely early in the morning, all the cavers (often more than 20, including some novices) were brutally awoken by the cruel homeowner, herself a caver, who gave permission to use her house as a base of operations.

Interestingly, the lack of rabies cases in cavers is evidence against the occurrence of aerosol transmission, except under extraordinary circumstances.

During the past two decades, as the number of threatened or endangered bat species has dramatically increased, cavers have seen many of their favorite caves closed for part of the year because of the bats' need for seclusion.
As cavers see more and more caves closed, it is understandable that some become resentful of the bats which are often given as the reason for closures.
Despite the natural conflict between the bats' need for seclusion and the caver's desire to go caving, most NSS members seem to be willing to restrict their own access to caves during the months when solitude is critical to bat survival.

From 1622, Sir James’ descendants were buried in a designated vault at Cavers church, near Hawick, where a branch of the clan also owned extensive estates and property.
The foundations of the modern dispute were laid in 1820, when an American Douglas dynasty was established, as families from Cavers and other Borders towns and villages emigrated in large numbers and colonised virgin territory in Canada and the USA.
The mass exodus from the south of Scotland coincided with the construction of a replacement Cavers kirk in 1822 with the 12th century building becoming a school, then a public hall, and latterly a barn.
