		CAVY, a name commonly applied to several South American rodent animals included in the family Caviidae (see Rodentia), but perhaps properly applicable only to those belonging to the typical genus Cavia, of which the most familiar representative is the domesticated guinea-pig.
		Cavies in general, the more typical representatives of the Caviidae, are rodents with hooflike nails, four front and three hind toes, imperfect collar-bones, and the cheek-teeth divided by folds of enamel into transverse plates.
		The tail is short or rudimentary, the incisors are short, and the outer surface of the lower jaw is marked by a distinct ridge.

		This sub-species is found in southern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina, and is commonly referred to as a Dwarf Patagonian Cavy.
		Their teeth never stop growing and are generally kept quite short.Cavies use a variety of movements: when undisturbed they walk, hopping like a rabbit, galloping and stotting — a sort of bouncing on all four limbs at once in order to cover long distances at high speed.
		Cavies have been clocked at speeds of over 28 miles per hour for more than half a mile.

	Cavy Cousins
		Within the group are forms known as guinea pigs or cavies, mocos or rock cavies, and the Patagonian "hares," locally called "mares." Cavies and rock cavies have the well-known chunky body shape of domestic guinea pigs, with short ears and limbs, a large head and a tail which is not externally visible.
		Cavies feed on plant material, and their cheek teeth continue to grow throughout life to counteract the heavy wear caused by chewing such food.

		The Rock Cavy or Mocó, Kerodon rupestris, is a cavy species endemic to eastern Brazil, from easter Piauí state to Minas Gerais state.
		Rock cavies are found in dry rocky areas, with low scrubby vegetation, and close to stony mountains and hills, resembling another distant related animal, the rock hyrax.
		Rocky cavies are common animals, even though they are frequently hunted for food by local human populations.

		If your cavy has at least one white toenail, you can hold their foot near the light and see the quik, which is the blood supply that comes down from the toe.
