 The Battle of Cawnpore-December 1857
All British writings repeatedly refer to Tantia Topi leading the Gwalior contingent to Cawnpore, but we must remember that the term “Gwalior Contingent” is misleading, keeping in view the fact that in December 1857 this contingent was not the same as a military entity what it was in May 1857.
Tantia’s move against Cawnpore at a time when the initiative had firmly been regained by the British was a titanic effort in terms of morale since the sepoy cause in Decmber 1857 was almost hopeless.
The rebel left rested on the Ganges and their centre was based on the built up area of Cawnpore which was located on both east and west bank of the Ganges canal.

'The Rising: The Ballad of Mangal Pandey' by Jonathan Foreman
It was a terrible way to die and a terrible sight to witness, but the minds of the British soldiers and loyal Indian troops who solemnly attended these executions were still scorched by the even greater horrors they'd encountered in the suppression of the Mutiny that had raged since the previous summer.
Horrors like the old well at Cawnpore in north-eastern India, filled with the remains of 200 white women and children who had been hacked to pieces in a tiny single-storey house known as the Bibigarh.
Whether it is the women and children dismembered at Cawnpore, or the mutineers executed in the bloody and often discriminate reprisals theat followed the uprising, the imagery of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 (in which between 100,000 and 150,000 people died) is still extraordinarily lurid in its bloody horror.

In Cawnpore, some 1000 White British soldiers, their wives and children took refuge from the Nonwhite mobs in a fortified magazine in the city near the Ganges River, hoping to hold out for a relief column they had been promised from other British outposts.
On 15 July 1857, the three surviving White men were then dragged out and shot before a large crowd of Indians who had clambered onto the walls of the compound where the Whites were being held prisoner, to watch the spectacle.
At Lucknow, the White British troops were similarly besieged, but had taken great care in the drawing up their provisions, and were able to hold out for four months until they were relieved by a British force from the south.

The Indian Mutiny was more of a mutiny by native soldiers and cavalry than it was a popular uprising, but contemporary Indian accounts tend to characterize it as the latter in an attempt to paint it as the first spark of independence for the country.
While the book's emphasis is on the events at Cawnpore, which would prove to be a catalyst for British revenge and an iron-handed continuation of British rule over India, the book also is an excellent overview of the entire Mutiny.
The reader will come in contact with the brave defenders of the Cawnpore Entrenchment and learn of their hellish ordeal.

He rightly emphasizes among the causes of the revolt the significance of British administrative and social reforms, provoking Indian anxieties about caste and religion.(7) Although armed revolt was endemic in British India, in 1857 the Indian troops of the Bengal army joined with the disinherited nobility and with landowners and peasants driven by economic pressures.
To these well-documented grievances, however, Mukherjee has added the violence of British colonialism: "Violence, it must be emphasized, was an essential component of the British presence in India"; "British rule in India, as an autocracy, had meticulously constructed a monopoly of violence"; "Imperial rule in India could only perpetuate itself by a deployment of terror".
The linkage between colonial rule and the Cawnpore massacre follows: "the terms of their violence [at Cawnpore] were thus derived from that very structure of power against which they had revolted".(8) More specifically:
