The Fort is set in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coastline on the Rame Peninsular, an important bird migratory point, and nature conservation area.
The Fort (Grade II* Listed) and its grounds are surrounded by the further reaches of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, with its Grade I Listed Formal Gardens - reputedly the most beautiful Country Park in England.

The Breakwater lies at the mouth of Plymouth Sound, between Bovisand Bay on the eastern side and Cawsand Bay to the west.
Despite appearances from the shore, the breakwater (or Shovel) fort is not on or connected to the Breakwater, although that was the original intention.

Amherst Battery in Kingsand had already been built to repel any enemy force landing in Cawsand Bay, and the strategic importance of Maker Heights was realised with the construction of a number of redoubts in the 1780s.

The Bacchus and Fort ships (twenty of these all told, I believe) were pretty big by the standards of the late forties and early fifties; each had five holds to be emptied and a team of store assistants would be allocated to check the cargo as it was unloaded or landed.
The tug only went as far as Cawsand Bay for the trials, but the experience of being tossed about within a very limited space and what felt like the ship being about to capsize was something that neither one of us would wish to repeat.

There is loads and loads to do at Fort Picklecombe such as: Sailing, Speedboating(if you have one), surfing, bodyboarding, tennis, exploring, sunbathing, playing on the beach or on the park, walking and much more!
Although it was a 'scaled down' funday it was still enjoyable for the kids who had a sandcastle competition, water sports and under 10's swimming competition!

 The Rame Peninsula
Perhaps a reason for the popularity was that two walks were on offer, one a walk to Cawsand and back for a 6 mile route, led by Pam with another of just over 10 miles adding in the loop from Cawsand to Rame to generate the longer walk.
From Cawsand we followed the link road back onto Kingsand and then along the coast and coastal path back above Fort Picklecombe and so into the Mt Edgecombe Park and to Cremyll for our return to Plymouth via the passenger ferry again.
The border sign for the two counties is clearly marked on the wall of a house between the two villages.
