Cayambe is the name of a volcano located in the central branch of the Ecuadorian Andes, in Pichincha province some 70 km northeast of Quito.
Cayambe, which has a permanent snow cap, is a Holocene compound volcano which has not erupted in historical times.
At 4,690 m on its south slope is the highest point in the world crossed by the Equator and the only point on the Equator with snow lying (Google Earth images).

Leaving the life we had all become used to in the rural communities around Cayambe was difficult, as well as accepting that we were about to seperate and spread out into isolated locations all over the country.
The funny thing is that even within Quito itself you have 1st world wrapped around 3rd, as the luxuries of north Quito butt up against the sprawling reaches of the southern section of the city, where middle and lower class families live very different lives from their compatriots in the north.
From big city and American style luxuries now on to a small forgotten town in the far southern reaches of the Ecuadorian sierra.

In the city of Cayambe we stop in a small biscuit place (biscuits are a local specialty) and have biscuits (of course!), cheese, and coffee.
The Cayambe hut is the nicest in Ecuador and actually has running water which means sinks in the bathroom and toilets that actually flush without using a bucket.
The glacier on Cayambe is the easiest of all the glaciated mountains (Cotopaxi, Iliniza Sur and Chimborazo) we have climbed so far.
