The "Tiegne" or king of Baol was a relative of the "Damel" (king) of Cayor.
Cayor and Baol were conquered by the French in the 19th century along with the rest of Senegal, in the campaigns of Governor Louis Faidherbe.

The kingdom was founded in secession from the third Damel of Cayor, by his own son, who killed him, and the history of Baol includes repeated attempts, only sometimes successful, of the Damels of Cayor to re-conquer Baol.
Baol and Cayor were reunited under the 14th Damel near the end of the 18th century.

In April 1806, near the end of the dry season, she and other members of her family were enslaved by tyeddo horsmen with "long, braided hair and warrior apparel." p1 The Tyeddo warriors were royal slaves of Amari Ngoone Ndella, the king of Cayor.
They formed a professional army loyal only to the king, whose job was to protect Cayor and raid enemy villages to obtain slaves to sell along the coast.
p1 Cayor was one of the four parts of the legendary Wolof kingdom, but Cayor was unstable since 1790 when it became divided by a series of religious wars.

The Damel of Cayor granted the use of land outside escales (stations) to favored merchants, but the dispute between the Damel and the French over the right to tax commerce around each escale created duplicate taxes for merchants.
Since the annexation of Cayor was too difficult because of the slavery and taxation problems, the French solution was to divide Cayor into six provinces.
The coastal telegraph line and forts were abandoned, and important Cayor villages that were bypassed by the railroad line declined.

While Gretz was pushing his dead van out of the Sahara desert in 1994 he heard SUPER CAYOR DE DAKAR, last examplar of the old-style bands that combined salsa with Senegalese mbalax by switching the timbales for African talking drums.
But Super Cayor, formed of old band-mates from Star Band, M'bol Cissé and James Gadiaga, scored hits with "Capitale-Region" and "Xamsa Bopp." They toured Europe in 1999 but didn't really catch fire so returned to their weeknight club gigs in Dakar.
It does have remakes of several familiar Super Cayor songs but it is still great, and now that Issa Cissokho is on the album it will be required listening for Baobab fans too.

You kinda wonder if Super Cayor moved forward to the past with its later salsa focus because the three mediocre mbalax tracks from 1994 aren't convincing or distinctive -- the best is "Diankhe Ndaw" with its near-skank rhythm guitar.
Super Cayor is still in its baby-steps growth phase here and has some strong foundations to build on, from a good grasp of arrangements to the prominent piano (the latter pretty unusual for a Senegalese band).
And any group with a lead singer as compelling as Mame Pathé Gadiaga -- his voice cries, it cuts through the arrangements, it commands -- bears listening to.
