Cdparanoia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was designed to be a minimalistic, high-quality CD ripper that would be able to compensate for and adjust to poor hardware to produce a flawless rip.
cdparanoia is designed to rip correctly and know as much as possible about the CD-ROM hardware instead of implementing extraneous features such as a graphical user interface or a CDDB interface.
One of the quirks behind cdparanoia is that its ripping status is indicated by a smiley.

Cdparanoia is a Compact Disc Digital Audio (CDDA) extraction tool, commonly known on the net as a 'ripper'.
Cdparanoia will read correct, rock-solid audio data from inexpensive drives prone to misalignment, frame jitter and loss of streaming during atomic reads.
At the same time, however, cdparanoia turns out to be easy to use and administrate; It has no compile time configuration, happily autodetecting the CDROM, its type, its interface and other aspects of the ripping process at runtime.

Note that this option will cause cdparanoia to attempt to read sectors before or past the known user data area of the disc, resulting in read errors at disc edges on most drives and possibly even hard lockups on some buggy hardware.
Note that this will cause cdparanoia to attempt to read partial sectors before or past the known user data area of the disc, probably causing read errors on most drives and possibly even hard lockups on some buggy hardware.
The output file argument is optional; if it is not specified, cdparanoia will output samples to one of cdda.wav, cdda.aifc, or cdda.raw depending on whether -w, -a, -r or -R is used (-w is the implicit default).

 KRUD Linux Package cdparanoia
Cdparanoia (Paranoia III) reads digital audio directly from a CD, then writes the data to a file or pipe in WAV, AIFC or raw 16 bit linear PCM format.
Instead, cdparanoia's strength lies in its ability to handle a variety of hardware, including inexpensive drives prone to misalignment, frame jitter and loss of streaming during atomic reads.
Cdparanoia is also good at reading and repairing data from damaged CDs.

Cdparanoia enforces consistency from whatever the drive considers to be the starting point of the data, and the drive is returning a slightly different beginning point each time.
Sadly, cdparanoia seemed to come out the worst - it had three 12 byte misses, one 13 byte miss, four 12 byte repeats, and one 6 byte repeat.
I think a number of people have done ports of cdparanoia now, all of which I'm sure are better than the quick hack that I came up with.

So the advantage of cdparanoia_log over the original cdparanoia is that all the information about detected (repaired and unrepaired) errors that occured during ripping will be stored in the logfile.
The BIG problem of my version is that it always writes info to a file that is defined in the source and if you want cdparanoia_log to write to another file or not make log at all, you have to recompile and reinstall it.
For my needs of cdparanoia this is still ok, I don't have time nor need to mess around more.

I use cdparanoia to rip the cds from the original cds.
This data is usually wrapped inside a very primitive structure, and the result has a WAV extension and is called a wav file.
Interestingly, cdparanoia produces exactly the same size files as cdda2wav does, so either that reflects the common origin, or the PCM data is the same regardless of what extracts it.

Hydrogenaudio Forums -> CDEX's Windows port of cdparanoia
Just a note, if you are using a port of cdparanoia for windows, if a cd drive caches, it will be of no more use than any other burst mode ripper and so there may be others that are easier to use.
However, if you're right about that cache stuff, cdparanoia undoubtly has a major weakness, although it is much better than any other ripper I tried except EAC.
Under Linux you may wish to use grip, a front-end to cdparanoia, which supports encoding to whatever command line you choose to type in (of which mppenc can certainly be one).

Cdparanoia is a utility for reading tracks from audio CDs as data.
In addition to basic reading, cdparanoia enforces strict alignment checking and data verification, totally eliminating jitter and spurious samples common to most CDROM drives (cdparanoia will not only eliminate intersector/interread jitter, but also handle drives that suffer from loss of streaming errors during atomic read operations).
Other cdparanoia features of cdda2wav include extra-robust error handling, complete autosensing of hardware configuration (no compile time configuration), and all interface and paranoia functions available in library form (use Paranoia III in your own applications!).
