  Cecil Gordon Lawson
The youngest son of William Lawson of Edinburgh, a well-regarded portrait painter, and of a mother also known for her flower pieces, he was born near Shrewsbury.
Lawson's triumph was with the luxuriant canvas, "The Minister's Garden", exhibited in 1878 at the Grosvenor Gallery, and afterwards on display in the Manchester Art Gallery.
Lawson may be said to have restored to English landscape the tradition of Thomas Gainsborough, John Crome and John Constable, infused with an imaginative intensity of his own.

Lawson took part in the battles of June and July in the following summer.
Appointed in January 1655-1656 as Blakes second-in-command, Lawson was a few weeks later summarily dismissed from his command, probably for political reasons.
During the troubled months which succeeded that event Lawson, flying his flag as admiral of the Channel fleet, played a marked political role.

A Hymn to Spring by Cecil Gordon Lawson
Lawson rose to fame as a poetic landscape painter in the five years before his tragically early death at the age of thirty one.
His father, William Lawson (flourished 1819-1864) was a portrait painter and his brother Francis William Lawson (1842-1935) was a successful figure in the illustration revival of the 1860s and also a painter.
Lawson seems to have been fascinated by the problem of representing a distant landscape seen through a frame or screen of tree trunks and foliage set in the immediate foreground.

Her leadership had already been damaged by the resignations of cabinet ministers Nicholas Ridley (due to racist remarks in an interview) and Nigel Lawson (who felt that Thatcher wasn't letting him do his job), but the killer blow was percieved as the resignation of Geoffrey Howe in early November.
She resigned on November 22, after the first round of a leadership challenge initiated by Michael Heseltine, and was replaced as party leader and Prime Minister by John Major.

Lawson purports to be working on a novel inspired by Bobby's experiences, but in fact has little time for anything but playing obscure games of "name that quotation" and matching his mentor drink for drink.
Bobby and Lawson decide to tell her that Lorraine left them all equal shares in the house and make Pursy, as she likes to be called, feel sufficiently unwelcome that she'll skedaddle back to her trailer-trash boyfriend in Florida and leave them in sodden peace.
Pursy, for her part, is shyly attracted to Lawson, and slowly warms to their reminiscences of her mother, which are far rosier than her own faint memories of unreliability and abandonment.

Shyly attracted to Lawson, she persuades him to cut back on drinking but Bobby shows more resistance even as his health deteriorates.
Sprinkled through with literary references and quotations that Bobby uses to test Lawson's knowledge, the script aims to be far less prosaic than it ultimately is. Principal defect is the inability to crank up any dramatic charge from its major revelations.
The past tragedy that caused Bobby and Lawson to flee Alabama spills out with what feels like fabricated momentousness, while the final disclosure regarding Pursy is merely predictable.

McLachlan originally trained to become a lawyer, but in 1878 gave this up to become a painter, encouraged by the Scottish historical painter John Pettie.
McLachlan's moody, romantic landscapes with their peasant figures and themes of humanity and nature, show the influence of George Hemming Mason and Cecil Gordon Lawson, but his style remained amateurish.
He exhibited from 1877 to 1897 at the Royal Academy, Royal Insitute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery and New English Art Club, becoming a member of the latter in 1887.
