Topic: Cecil Kimber

  Cecil Kimber
Kimber started to refer to his cars as "MGs" (for Morris Garages) in 1924, but only in 1925 was all mention of Morris dropped and the term "MG Super Sports" emblazoned on his publicity material.
Kimber was left simply to manage the plant, which is what he thought he was doing when he took on a contract to repair tanks there during the Second World War.
Cecil Kimber's charisma had made him a tricky dismissal prospect, but it emerged after his sacking that Kimber's ballooning ego had irked Nuffield for years.

ENJOYING MG 1999 - OLD NUMBER ONE
Kimber's life wasn't destined to settle down, however, as the General Manager committed suicide in 1922 and Kimber was appointed to run the business.
Cecil Kimber now had a clear ambition to create a distinction between MG cars and their humble Morris base: the cheap and unsporting nature of Morris cars was not helpful to his attempts to sell high-class sporty cars at, often, twice the price of the basic Morris-bodied machine.
Kimber's new Morris Oxford-based car for 1924 became the first to be advertised as just the MG Super Sports, rather than the MG Super Sports Morris, and its modifications included flattened springs, raked steering, better shock absorbers, higher final drive ratio and repositioned accelerator and handbrake.

Kimber, in pursuit of a name for his inspired cars, chose the M from Morris and the G from Garages as a tribute to his employer - Billy Morris, they were not abbreviations.
Kimber's memory a favour: remember that the mists of time have a habit of obscuring the facts, so shun the self-proclaimed experts, become a purist and stand out from the crowd and proudly state - 'M.G. stands for itself - not Morris Garages, and the dots are there as a matter of design only.'

MG History - Classic Car History
The first MG was built because of a need, a need that was sensed intuitively by Cecil Kimber, general manager of Morris Garages.
He felt that the public wanted a small, but high-performance sporting machine that could be driven sedately on the roads during the week and raced on Sundays.
Cecil Kimber's intuition was well founded: the desire of the public for a small high performance car did exist, and the car he designed went far beyond his expectations.

Nobody can state with certainty when the first MGs were produced, though the honour should probably fall to the six Raworth-bodied, two-seater sports cars the founder, Cecil Kimber, commissioned to be built on Morris-Cowley chassis in 1923.
This was while Kimber was still Manager of Morris Garages - from where the MG name originated.
The Hotchkiss-engined car so often and erroneously referred to as Number One did not, in fact, appear for another two years, and was more accurately Kimber's first attempt at building a car solely for competition.

Cecil Kimber, of course, was the spiritual father of MG.
Kimber sought to separate MG from Morris, to make it a carmaker in it's own right, not just a modifier of Morris cars (it has been speculated that the removal of the "dots", from M.G. to MG, was indicative of the desire within MG to distance itself from Morris.
For the record, Kimber himself viewed the creation of "Old Number One" in 1925 as the true beginning of MG (even though it was far from the first car).
